Drinking Too Much Post Op?

Recommended Posts

I am a few days post op and have been doing my clear liquid diet. I re-read my discharge diet instructions from my doc and saw that they recommend only drinking 1/2 a cup at a time. Now I am worried that I may have already stretched my pouch because I know I have been drinking more than that. I kept the goal of 64oz. of liquid in mind and didn't even recall the note of taking in 1/2 a cup at a time.

When I re-read the paperwork and measured out what I should be drinking I became pretty upset. Could I have really stretched my pouch out by drinking too much?

:think

I don't think so. You would have experienced pain if anything were wrong at this point. So long as you rest for a minute or two between half cup increments, you should be just fine.

Liquid runs through really fast. No worries!

Hi silry,

No worries. Just take your liquids in a little at the time. Just sip on them. Liquids go right thru anyway, they don't hang around long enough to stretch your pouch.1/2 cup at the time is fine..just do a 1/2 cup if you're actually trying to drink and not sip and then in a few minutes drink another 1/2 cup. believ me..if you'd taken in too much, you'd know it. Too much will cause pain and it would possibly come back as well. If this hasn't happened...you'e fine.

Whew! Thanks! I am trying to follow the post-op to a "T" so I was worried!

I am 2 days post op also.... I have been doing the liquid diet and sipping on Water, my discharge instructions stated 48-64oz water daily so not to get dehydrated, the water passes on down just as I am sure the clear broth does yet I still fill full, I have been instructed to eat 6 small meals a day meaning 4 oz of broth, sugar free Jello, Decaf tee and to drink my water in between in a 10oz sippee cup (like babies use). It works as if not to drink too much at one time. Good Luck and Take good care, hope you aren't as bruised up as I am, but overall I am feeling pretty good...Dana

i woke up with a little pain on my port side, but it's the big bubba in the middle of the belly that is giving me woes. when i walk, i walk with my hand pressing on it. my friends say i look pregnant. LOL. when i can get up and down without much effort, that is when i will be a happy camper. oh, yeah, and when i can eat again. LOL.

good luck to you! :)

My post-op for the first 72 hours was a medicine cup (1 oz)every 15 mins. This was to make sure I was getting my liquids in. 4 oz an hour, 16 hours equals 64 oz a day. I was doing that plus some. When I asked about the instruction sheet, I was told that they tell people small amounts frequently so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Also some people are very swollen after banding and even sipping can be difficult. I know a few bandsters that have had problems even getting Water down the first day or so. I am sure you are fine. I was drinking a 20 oz bottle of propel every 2 hours or so, and my pouch is fine. My surgeon's theory was the more fluids the better, it gets the anesthesia out faster and keeps you hydrated. ~Mandy

I had surgery a week ago tomorrow and I am just getting to the point where I can get all of the 64 oz. of Fluid down that I need daily. I have not been able to drink all of my protien and the liquids in a day that have been recommended for me. Is this a common problem?

Some people have swelling and others don't. The swelling can make it hard to get the thicker liquids down, there are clear protien drinks out there, they are much thinner and eaiser to drink with swelling. ~Mandy

I was banded 2/20/07, has anyone ate anything other than the clear liquid stuff and have you considered the cream Soups as clear liquid? Confession: Ive tried brocolli cheese Soup the pass two days, but now I emotionally feel horrible about it, from now on Im going to do my best to stay with the broth stuff until the clear liquid phase is done. Just wanted to vent since most of you all had your surgerys around the same time as me. Pls let me know how all of you are doing, what your eating, and when your eating?:help:

How soon have all of you started exercising and is anyone going to curves?

I have continued with the Clear Liquids. I was advised that starting Day 4 post-op that I could introduce sippable yogurt if I felt hungry; which I did. I was also told that as early as Day 8 I could incorporate Protein Shakes which I have now started. The Protein shakes have been the key for me - I feel very satisfied now. Today I went to PF Changs with a friend for lunch an ordered a bowl of their Wonton Soup and just drank the broth. It was Mmmmmm Good! My Dr. advised me that I could start on creamy soups on Day 11 which is coming along soon! Never thought I would be foaming at the mouth for some velvety potato sippable soup!

My Dr didnt want me to start the Protein Shake until after 1 week, which was unfortunate b/c that was the only thing that was giving me energy. I too have not been able to drink all my liquids as recommended, simply out of fear of the unknown, but after reading the replys on this forum I feel better about it.

Has anyone ever experienced head pounding headaches, stiffnecks postoperatively? ( Do you think it might be the anesthesia wearing off?)

I too believe the protein shakes help, I was able to start it today and I feel better than I have the past week. Isnt it funny I never thought broccoli and cheese soup could ever taste so good. But I think that now that I can have the protein shakes that'll be better! Goodluck to you and great job on keeping with the clear liquids, keep me updated!!:clap2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
