Hi everyone.

My name is Lyn, and I am 24 years old. I am new here and am starting the process for a RNY. I spoke with my insurance and they just need me to schedule surgery etc. so I'm assuming I won't have months of waiting. I'm predicting (hoping) that I can have surgery the week after Thanksgiving.

One thing I am curious about is clothing actually. I'm getting married in 9 months (May 2014) and already bought my dress (size 26--biggest size they had!) I'm wondering if I should budget for a new one or if I should try to alter my current one down...

I want to be clear that I'm not doing this for cosmetic/wedding reasons. Lately my asthma and knees have worsen to the point I can barely walk the stairs to get to my apartment. I've considered this surgery for years, and my doctor recently informed me that I might have type 2 diabetes. (Blood test for that is next week). I watch my mother suffer from diabetes to the point that she almost lost her feet multiple times. My uncle actually died from it.

I'm sorry for the mush of words...it's almost 1:30 am here and my fiancé and I watched an online seminar about this tonight, so I'm slightly an insomniac currently...I hope I didn't annoy anyone with this post, just a lot going through my mind currently....

I hope to get to know you guys and make friends. I'm extremely nervous with the whole process...I'm not telling anyone besides my fiancé until I have a surgery date so I feel kind of alone right now.

Hi Lyn and welcome!!

If you are able to get your surgery by thanksgiving you will be looking at about 6-7 months before your wedding and I can guarantee you will not be a size 26. It also might cost you more to alter the dress than just buying a new one. I think it will be hard for you to figure out what size you will be at that time. When I got married I actually had my dress made. The dresses that fit my boobs were huge every where else. So it was cheaper for me to get a custom dress. Best place to find people that can make your dress would be bridal shows.

Oh and congrats on all the exciting changes in your life - marriage and your step towards a healthy life!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
