had sx 8/5 with complications..trying to get through it

Recommended Posts

I found this site yesterday and was thanfkful. I was so pumped about having gastric bypass and did all my research. I knew complications were a possibility but were rare. Everyone I know personally that had it had zero problems. Well wouldn't you know I would be the one to have complications. I had my sx on Mon. 8/5..all was well. I was supposed to go home on 8/7 but had been passing blood from my bowels and my blood counts were dropping. My surgeon told me it was most likely left over blood in my gi tract from sx and would resolve itself. My blood counts leveled out and I came home on 8/9. I could only keep down small amts of Water. I could not tolerate Protein. I was constantly nauseous and miserable. Around 10:30 pm on 8/10..one day being home...I had a severe grabbing /clinching feeling in the middle if my chest aand I knew something was terribly wrong. About 5 min later I began vomiting bright red blood. My husband immediately took me to the ER. My surgeon was called in and did a NG tube...tthe worst thing ever. He re-admitted me and hoped the tube would drain the blood. It didn't get it all and I was still so sick. Sunday night I was taken back to the OR and he did and endoscopy..found a blood clot in my new pouch that had blocked it. He removed this and found some leakage along my staple line which he clipped. I was in the hosp until 8/14. The nausea has been terrible and sleeping almost impossible. I still can't tolerate protein. I can sip my water and eat baby food applesauce. I am walking about 3-5 kin at a time about 7-10 times a day which helps with the soreness. What an ordeal this has been. I'm so ready to be back to some kind of normal. Has anyone else had any of these issues? How long before the nausea goes away? Thanks for any feedback.

Oh my goodness, that's terrible....I hope you start to feel better very soon. That was my fear, blood clot because I had one prior to RNY...I can't relate as having nausea because I was lucky to bypass that part...I just wanted to send you a word of encouragement, everything will be okay from this point on, just take your time and remember it's a mental situation and if your mentality is lined up with whats going on with your body, you will be fine. I feel for you, take your time and get well soon.

Blood clots are definitely the exception and so glad to hear they identified and corrected it. The nausea and intolerance for Protein are very common and if you take out the "miserable" factor, nothing to worry about. As we all hear so often, everyone is different, so it's hard to put any kind of firm timeline on when it will subside. But it will pass.

Walking will help a lot (especially with gas) so you definitely want to keep that up. Drinking as much Water as you can will also help. Protein is important for promoting healing and a whole list of other things. Keep trying different ones until you find one that even if you don't "love" it, you can at least tolerate it. Even drinking a single ounce several times over the course of day will help. Keep increasing it a little at a time until you're able to get ALL of your doctor's recommended protein.

The first two or three weeks post-op are not much fun but before you know it the pounds are going to start melting away and those first few weeks will be a distant memory. You're gonna love the new you!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
