Discovering the Error of my ways - Food Logging

Recommended Posts

Thanks to the wisdom of DLCoggin I began logging my food. He made great sense in his post – A little Too Skinny. I did not log my food for many reasons, but the main one was my husband drove me nuts with his logging. It was so bad he actually logged his food during a movie, and to top it off I asked him one day at a restaurant how hungry he was and he pulled out his IPhone and MFP app to decide he how hungry he was. I thought really you have to ask your stupid phone if you are hungry how silly. This was all pre-op and hubby was trying to slim down from a 36 to a 34 waist.

Well I have been logging a little over a week now and I get it. I have started losing weight again after assuming I was done with my weight loss after 13 months. I had reached my personal goal, but still secretly wanted to cut 5 pounds.

So I went at it with gusto and enthusiasm, and realized a lot about my food habits. Most were not good. I figured I was hitting my Protein goal every day, but with logging I was able to see how I was doing throughout the day. Since I was not hitting my goal I began drinking my shakes again. I also noticed the amount of “crap” I was eating, and how much snacking I was doing. As long as I stayed honest with my logging I was staying honest with myself.

I have heard Dr. Phil say many times – we cannot change what we do not acknowledge. I am now starting my road to change eating habits and began the process of building a habit for food logging. Food logging allows you to acknowledge what you need to work on, but also what you are doing well. It allows you to realize your small victories. For example as someone who was not hitting my protein goal – I take great pride in saying I hit my protein goal today, and soon it will be a habit and no problem to stay on track.

So if you stall, or are unhappy with your weight loss – first ask yourself am I logging my food. You may realize after logging that you are missing something, like I did with my protein intake.

It is my understanding from my doc and Nut that it is for the rest of our lives to hit your Protein goals. However as we get further along in our journey our choices in protein are expanded. Whole foods protein is the best option - meat, fish, eggs and so on. Then you supplement with shakes.

I feel best during the day if I start out with a Protein Shake. I then try to eat lean meats and fish. I also use double pasteurized egg whites in my drinks.

Honestly it is tough to get in all my protein everyday, but I realized through logging it is imperative.

I really need to calculate exactly how much protein I am getting from food daily, I don't eat meat anymore after surgery... I just don't have the taste for it. I will eat fish however... I am probably not getting enough protein. I should drink a shake after my run in the morning.. I use to do that but stopped, I think I will start again. Thanks for the tip Music1618 :)

Your welcome!

Since you are running so much everyday you should really think about increasing your protein intake.

When soccer season kicks into full gear for me in the next few weeks I really strive for 120g each day. It does give you the energy and helps your muscles.

I have just started running for distance and for me I have found that a Protein Drink before my run is better for me - I get that boost of energy and fullness.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
