Too Much Time to Think

Recommended Posts

Ok, you guys will think I am so crazy. All my life of dieting (same as everyone else), I would start out with a particular calorie count when I would stop losing, lower the calories. Any way...on the liquid diet I averaged 800 calories. This last week on clear liquid I think it's like 200 if that. When we start eating more calories I am worried my body will be use to these crazy low amounts.

Does that even make sense to anyone? You can tell me I am crazy!!

It makes sense, but it doesn't work that way, actually. You need to consume a certain amount of calories for your body to produce enough energy to burn fat. Also if your calorie intake is too low it will put your body into starvation mode, which will make it preserve fat. So I know it sounds kinda messed up, but consuming more calories (or more accurately, the correct range of calories) will make you lose MORE weight.

Your body is a wonderful machine. Starvation mode as we call it goes back to the caveman days when humans had to hunt for food. There would be winter months where food was not always available. So we would eat and eat in preparation for the famine times. So when you go into starvation mode your body thinks it is going through famine time and holds onto everything you put in to it.

We as wls patient go through starvation mode after surgery. Most of us stall about a month out and get frustrated and begin thinking this is not working I just spent all this money for nothing. In actuality it is your body being normal.

It is all about what calories we put into our bodies. There is a big different between 120 of a Protein shake and 120 of Cookies. Protein feeds your body and Cookies just add calories.

With the surgery you are not able to eat as much as we used to. Therefore restricting the amount of calories we consume.

Does that make sense?

I think those of us who had an eating disorder, have a hard time with eating more calories. I'm a year out and I hate eating over 800 calories. I'm not losing anymore And I have not reach my goal so I know I'm doing something wrong. I just can't bring myself to eating a lot of food.

Is it calories that make you worried, or the amount of food?

My doc said something at a group meeting that has always stuck with me. We tend to gravitate towards foods we can eat more of. His example was a lady that said she never ate meat because she could only take 2 bites and had to stop. So she was eating stuff that went down easier.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
