Emotional after Surgery

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm not post op yet but I keep reading where some people are saying that even though they are usually not emotional people they tend to be very emotional after surgery. Do any of you know why this is? What do you tend to think about to try to get your mind off of it? I'm not a cryer so I'm curious about this. I hate my job but thankful for it because that's how i pay my bills. I just wouldn't want to be an emotional wreck at work because it will make me feel as if I'm letting my guard down.

It is due to our rapid weight loss. Your fat cells have lots of hormones stored in them. As those are leaving our body the hormones are absorbed and thus we become an emotional wreak. Also many of us go through a mourning process. You see the tv commercials or sitcoms and it seems everyone is eating. You on the other hand are having Soup for the millionth time and all you really want is a burger and fries.

Everyone is different and the emotional stage hits everyone at different times and with different intensity.

My suggestion is when you are alone and you feel that urge to cry let it happen. The more you fight the greater the chance of having issues in front of people.

i was ok in front of other people because i felt i had to be. But when alone a few hours (the first couple of days after surgery) I'd cry my eyes out. I felt overwhelmed with the emotions of my past overeating and what it had done to me and I felt relief to have the surgery and get the help I needed. So i was on a roller coaster of happy tear, sad tears and a fear of the unknown if this would work for me. The emotional part lasted maybe a couple of week...then all was right again.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
