Hi

hair loss has never been mentioned to me and this is the first time I have seen it mentioned. I might have not had it done if I'd known. I have nightmares about losing my hair [as I mentioned it is very fine already]

It really does terrify me.

I am in the UK - you have to be an extreme case to have the band on NHS. Even though I am 'only' 163 lbs I am only 4ft 11ins tall, have problems with hips and knees and have high blood pressure. I am going to private clinic to have the procedure so yes self pay. Not a lot of people in the UK have health insurance because we have the NHS. As you say not sure that private health insurance would cover this anyway unless you were extremely overweight. I am still classed as obese as I have a BMI of over 30

As I said above, I sooooo agree with you about the Hair loss thing absolutely terrifying me, too. In all I've read, the above tips do help (keep Protein up-some say above 100gms a day; take Biotin supplements and a good multivitamin; and use a Shampoo formulated to prevent hair loss-one is Nioxin, you can get it online).

I see your point, at your height I guess 163 is quite a bit to carry on your small frame. I didn't realize until you posted what your height was (BTW, I didn't say "'only'" 163 lbs...I know sometimes carrying even 10 extra pounds makes people feel uncomfortable). I guess I just get so used to seeing those BMI tickers, sorry...

Thank you very much for posting back to me. I also had no idea you were in the UK until you said it and also didn't know at what BMI the NHS will pay for the band. Now I understand why so many go to Belgium or nother places to get their bands placed (like we go to Mexico).

Again, I do wish you all the luck in the world on your upcoming surgery, you'll be successful, I know you will! And won't it be great to get off those BP meds? (I was on them for a while for a heart arrhythmia, they made me feel awful.) Keep us updated on your progess, will ya?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
