10 months post op or more, how many protein shakes are u drinking a day?

I'm 10 months out and I still drink 3 a day. Was wondering if anyone else still does this?

I'll be two years post-op in October and I've had at least one shake a day (usually for breakfast) since shortly after my surgery. Instead of how many shakes a day are you drinking, perhaps the more important question is how do you get ALL of your doctor's recommended Protein, every day? My doctor recommends 100g a day. That's a tough number to hit on a daily basis without my 35g shake. With the shake, I hit the 100g about 95% of the time.

So if you can get the required 60, 80 or 100g of Protein a day in the food you eat - that's always the way to go. Without exception (at least none that I ever heard), doctors and nutritionists recommend getting as much of your nutrition as possible from "real" food. But they recognize that's not always practical. And that's where supplements (shakes, Protein Bars, Vitamins, etc.) come into the picture.

You're drinking three shakes a day. You might want to consider a goal of replacing one of those shakes with high protein food - chicken, fish, turkey, low-fat cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, hummus, turkey Jerky, and the list goes on. Lots of options. If you can consistently hit your protein goal with two shakes and food for a few weeks, then you might want to consider trying to move on to one shake a day and getting the rest of your protein from food. I hit my goal weight of 155 lbs in December of last year. My daily weight maintenance calorie goal is 1620 calories. I've been able to hit that daily average, and get 100g of protein a day in (with one daily shake), for over eight months. And my weight this morning was 151.8.

I get about 100 g a day my shakes each are about 26g Protein plus my bars are 30 g..I want to say that 60% of my protein is from that and the remainder from "real food" ...I completely agree with you though...I know many doctors have different plans for their patients. ..my dr has me on this plan and luckily I have been doing really good...calories however are a different issue...I am supposed to be between 800 & 1000 and sometimes I barely reach 700...

I eat two Protein bars per day. Why? Because I do not like to cook and I like knowing portion sizes and calories in advance. I won't cook anything unless it can go in the microwave. I know that it is better to eat "real food" and I do so occasionally but life is too busy. But I am trying to eat more canned goods and frozen vegetables (convenient) and I am trying to learn how to cook more "real" food in a microwave.

i am 4 months out and drink none! They made me sick, i get my Protein through lean meat and yogurts and such.

I am 4 months and had stopped drinking them. However, it seems like a lot of people have better weight loss after increasing their Protein so I am adding back one per day.

My drs protein requirement is 60g but I'm shooting for more. I don't think I could get there without a supplement.

Most if not all doctors and nutritionists would agree that it is always best to get your protein (and all nutrients for that matter) from real food. The key is that you need to get ALL of your doctor's recommended protein. That's where supplements come into play. My doctor requires her patients to get 100g of protein a day. I drink one 35g Protein Shake for Breakfast practically every single day and I hit that 100g goal 95% of the time. Without the supplement, I found it pretty much impossible to do that consistently.

My doc and nut said that your body is able to break down real food Protein better than the supplements. They also warned us about Protein Bars. They said most of them are just a glorified candy bar and have lots of bad things in them. He said when choosing a protein supplement make sure to calculate the calories vs protein amount. Example: my Protein Shake mix has 30g of protein and it has 130 calories. Since each gram of protein is 4 calories I know that my Protein Powder only has 10 extra calories from the other ingredients. I just looked up a Quest Protein Bar and it has 20 g of protein and 170 calories. So 80 calories is from protein and nearly 100 calories are from other stuff.

I recommend adding egg whites to your drinks. You can't taste it and it adds whole food Proteins to your diet. I add mine to my Powerade everyday. I am going to drink it any way might as well get protein out of it. It is 3.3 g of protein per pump. I will add 8-10 pumps for my powerade. I promise you can not taste it, but I have learned not to shake it up once added to a drink. You need to stir it. Shaking it just adds foam. My nut did warn not to get the grocery store egg whites as they are made for cooking. I have added a picture of what I use.

Wow, how great is this?! I've been doing this a while and this is the first time I've seen the formula of protein calories vs. total calories. I drink Pure Protein Shakes. 35g of protein and either 160 or 170 calories depending on which flavor I'm drinking. So 140 calories from protein, 20 or 30 from other stuff. Check. I also occasionally have a Pure Protein bar. 20g of protein and 200 calories. So 80 calories from protein, 120 from other stuff. So with the shakes, other stuff calories are 15-20%. With the bar, other stuff calories are 60%.

And pumping egg whites to boost your protein - how cool is that!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
