Emergency Defill

Recommended Posts

I came down with a viral infection in my intestines on sun or mon. The swelling was probably irritated my band. Couldn't eat or drink for 3 days. I kept vomiting. I couldn't even take my pills .I phoned Nancy today to ask for a defill. I went at 1' 00 today. What a relief. Nancy took 2 cc out.I was so glad she left some in.(3.5). I was kind of hoping for a 6 inch sub Mandi tomorrow lol. That was my excitment for a few days.On our way home i drank 2 bottles of Water and a med.frosty mmmm. I am down 195 now. i met my goal ;not a healthy way tho.:speechles

haha... trust me... those subs are bad news! I wish I'd had a little bit left in. At least you took care of it, and will be feeling 100% soon!

Take care,

Mandi

OK guys just wondering if I'm over concerned but with Mandi and Loriely with emergency defils lately, and knowing there's noone trained in this province to do this should I be asking Dr.Cobourn in advance how to deal with that? Is it an outside chance that something happens or is it fairly probable(I'm always playing the odds).I would not rely on our local hospital to deal with it for many reasons, privacy being one.Regardless I really hope Loriely and Mandi are feeling lots better and back on track soon.:)

I think its just more of a coincidence both Mandi and Loriely are defilled. I certainly would be expecting it to happen. Apparently there is some type of script you can get to stop the vomitting. Maybe if you were to get a stomach flu, that would be the first thing to do, then maybe you wouldnt get any irritation to need the de-fill. I wouldnt over worry about it though, but its good to be prepared.

Thanks everyone.Iwasn't going to say anything but i find it is important for people to know you can have a few bumps on this journey. This is not band related. I just hope i didn't do any damage.Cloe if i need to have a fill in a few weeks Nancy said to come back. I have awesome restriction now but i know it won"t last. It is because of the swelling. I thought it was cause from STRESS (a little bit) 18 year old son grrr. Love -hate relationship. I wish you could skip 13 till23yrs old.haha, oh well must go .

Loriely,

Sounds like you had some fun, I know that Scarborough Grace Emerg has trained several docs on how to do a defill. I seem to remember some of Dr Coburn's patients mentioning that some staff at Trillium Emerg had been trained too (I could be very wrong about that)

If you can't get to either of those emergencies and need a defill right now and that can happen. I know people whose band tightened up and they could not swallow saliva which turns to de-hydration so fast. Go to any emerg and let them know what you have most larger hospitals have fluroscopes and they will see the port on the scope and getting a de-fill shouldn't be that bad. But if you can wait for your surgeon or their staff that is still best.

Good to hear you are doing better

Wow Loriely, glad you are feeling better. It is an eye opener what could happen. A viral infection, an over fill and I heard someone with a terrible cold run into trouble. This is serious business.

Astro: don't worry about it. You're about the same distance from the NS fill lady as I am. I wasn't deathly afraid about having to get the defill, and absolutely would have driven to see her, had the hospital not been able to do the defill for me. (I was just concerned because of the recent snow storms, and driving somewhere I'd never been... but I would have!)

I too questioned whether I should have mentioned it. But like Loriely said, people need to know that there ARE bumps, and it can happen easily. I COULD have gone and gotten gravol suppositories... and I think I WILL, now. I was stupid, and didn't think anything like this would happen.

Look at me, I've coasted on the same fill since august...I'm sure everyone hated me for having things so easy for so long, and here I am, unfilled now, and probably gaining waaaay faster than I lost! Things happen... it's not even an issue for me. Don't worry. I wasn't. I lived in Saskatchewan, and got it done in Ontario! The closest place I had to go for fills or defills was 8 hours away in Calgary, and I didn't think twice.

No worries!

(also... its nice to know that I DO have this lovely little Visa lying around, and since I've done it before, I know how easily I can fly to TO for just the day, for a fill. It's a little extreme, but it is an option also.)

Thanks Mandi and Loriely,I don't want to sound like a worry wart and the funny thing is I'm usually quite the opposite however I just kinda got a little freaked when I first read about the problems and got thinking about the worst case senario (me climbing over snowbanks for miles only to find the damn bridge closed yet again for high winds....then airports closed down and having to face the 30 hour wait in emerg to see a doctor.....snap**#^,ok vision gone)hehe...end of negetive thinking:rolleyes: .

Astrotoes ---> :) Glad you've snapped out of it! hehe

Sherry, sorry... this lady is someone trained by Dr. Cobourn for his Maritime patients, who otherwise had no one near-ish by. You're gonna have to buckle down and drive all the way to see Dr. B, just like we'll have to drive all the way to see 'fill-lady' :) Too bad we can't switch!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
