9mos post op! Need some advice!

Recommended Posts

I'm 9mos post op and experiencing my first stale.

Here are the facts:

Down to 150lbs from 250lbs

Want to lose 10 more lbs

70 grams of Protein a day

Log everything in mfp

Run and/or work out 3 to 4 days a week

Could do better at Water intake

Take my Vitamins

1,000 to 1,200 calories a day

Any other ideas on what to change? I would be happy with a half pound to a pound a week.

Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing everything right.. The last 10 are just the hardest to lose. Up the Protein.. Increase or decrease activity... Just shake up your whole week and see if you can't shake something loose

date of surgery 02/21/13 surgery weight 340 lbs. current weight 146 lbs

Try the 5 day pouch test. A girl in my support group tonight said that she did it a few weeks ago and lost 7 lbs in the week.

It's pretty much starting over. liquids for a few days then soft foods and so on.

It's supposed to reset your pouch.

You are experiencing your first stall at nine months out? That in and of itself is pretty amazing. Almost unheard of. You might want to consider the possibility that this isn't a "stall". It could be your body telling you that it's where it wants to be. What's your BMI and height to weight ratio?

I'd recommend that you just keep doing exactly what you're doing for two or three weeks and see what happens. If you start losing again, great. If not, you might want to start thinking "maintenance" as opposed to "losing". Stalls can last longer than three weeks but at this point in your journey, you may have reached your destination. At least as far as your body is concerned and it always pays to listen to what it's telling you.

Huge congratulations!

Great advice from all of you! Thank you so much. I'll monitor the next few weeks, make some changes to my diet/protein and exercise and then go from there. It might be time for me to adjust to the maintenance mode. I'm certainly happy with how I look and feel, but I was concerned about gaining weight and wanted to lose as much as possible. I've heard our bodies will lose and then gain back 10 or so pounds before we maintain. Again, big thanks!

I have a theory that the ten pound "bounce back" is the result of pushing our bodies below the weight they want to be at. When you can't "push" it any further, you gradually start increasing your calorie intake to a maintenance level. And your body responds by leveling out at the weight it wanted to be in the first place! Lol. I'm unaware of any science to support my theory. But I intentionally did not set a weight goal, opting instead to just follow the protocol until my weight stabilized. In my case that was about nine months ago and at 155 lbs. I've been within two or three pounds of that weight ever since. No bounce back. Could just be coincidence but it's a lot more fun thinking I proved my theory!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
