Why did you choose RNY instead of sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I go for my first info meeting and was initially set on the sleeve. Did anyone else change their mind from the sleeve to rny? Why and are you happy with that choice? My fears with RNY are with malnutrition and the seriousness of the surgery. I am 5/5 and 240 lbs which puts me at like a 39.9 bmi . Thanks for the help!

My doctor recommended the sleeve for me but after being on here and seeing so many people having revisions from band and sleeve to rny , I changed my mind. I only wanted to do this once and I wanted it to be something I knew would work. I believe with the sleeve it didn't help w heartburn and I had that so bad and opted for that which would be most helpful :) that being said, I love my surgery. I've lost a little over 70 lbs in four months and feel amazing. It's been rough at times but so worth it for my health and as long as you are diligent about your Vitamins and medical diet, I wouldn't worry too much about being malnourished. I'm sure with my awful diet if junk before surgery I was much worse off ;)

I wanted sleeve in the beginning and changed my mind as my diabetes would have not gone away with the sleeve. I asked my doctor tons of questions and decided rny was the way to go.

My surgeon wanted me to keep an open mind on the different surgeries cause I was set on the rny. The sleeve is very popular here so he suggested that. After hearing my reason he said rny would be best for me. I wanted my diabetes gone, high blood pressure gone and I wanted to be able to have a family. Also, I didnt want to go through what my dad with with his heart attack and stroke. Today, 8 months out I have no more signs of diabetes, blood pressure is no longer high but kinda low now and I got my all time wish of being able to have a family :)

Sleeve was also a possibility for me. I didn't like the idea of having to purchase expensive special Vitamins. I also liked the fact that RNY had been around and tested for many decades. Finally my surgeon would have done the sleeve as an open procedure, and I really wanted laproscopic. I know it is more successful with big weight loss, and I know that patients don't seem to gain as much weight back, but I am hoping that I can make my pouch work for me.

I initially wanted the sleeve but then learned that they remove 80% of your stomach. I know that stomach cancer is rare but I didn't want to take any chances. Then I decided to get the lap band and after going on to Lapbandtalk.com and found that so many people had so many problems with malfunctions, slips, erosions, ulcers, and fills I was not convinced that the band was rational. So I decided to go with the gastric bypass rny because they told me it was laproscopic and the dumping syndrome really sold me because I'm a sweet and fast food junkie and I needed a tool that was going to eliminate my ability to indulge in those foods.

I went by this philosophy (that I came up with by myself): I got the bypass bc I didn't want them to put something in me (Lapband) or take something out of me (sleeve). Instead, they would just move around what's inside of me, and it is reversible if something didn't go right.

HW: 280, surgery date: 5/15/13, CW: 230, lost 50 pounds.

In my case it was very simple: G-band was not a fit for my situation. I was diagnosed as morbidly obese and the band would have failed lamentably. I also move every 3-4 years which was a no go with my surgeon.

Next: Tricare does not approve the sleeve procedure (been told that by their Rep and read their full Bariatric section). There are some MTFs that do it but I rarely hear/read about it, so I don't know how accurate that info is.

I was left with RNY as my only and most ideal option which I am beyond happy with.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
