Questions to Ask the Surgeon?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am having my revision surgery to the RNY from the VSG on 8/13, but I have an appointment with my surgeon on Monday the 6th to talk about everything, and my pre-op at the hospital is on the 8th. I am compiling a list of questions to ask, but I would like to use this thread for people to post the questions that they have asked, or want to ask, and what SHOULD be asked about the RNY surgery before you go under the knife. Please assist! Thanks. :)

When will I be thin?!?!? I joke, I joke :). I guess I'd be most interested in the differences in recovery and post op diet between your sleeve and the RNY. Also any particular complications you are at an increased risk for since you're a revision. How many revisions has he performed? How often does he see strictures? What supplements will you need post-op? What does he expect your weekly weight loss to be?

Is this the same surgeon that did your sleeve or are you going with someone new?

Good luck!!!!

No. I got my sleeve done in Mexico, so this is my first surgery with this Dr!

Oh then ask him EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF!!!!! Big or small, ask it all. Will give you a good chance to see how open and receptive he is to his patients doing research and asking questions. And a good indicator of how supportive he will be with you long term. My RNY was done by the same doc that put my lapband in and then took my band out... By the time I had my RNY I was like 'just do it, I trust your judgement by now'.

What I wished I asked my surgeon was What could go wrong during the surgery that would make him go from laparascopic to open surgery?

I had open surgery even though he said he does it the other way and I was totally shocked and appalled when I discovered it.

Wow jerz, did you go under thinking you were getting the lapro and woke being told he had to do open? If so, did your insurance pay for it?

I specifically asked at the seminar how the surgery was performed and he said "laparascopic" so open surgery was not even in my thoughts. He didn't even have the nerve to tell me. It was discovered when the nurse took out my drain and she exclaimed "oh my...he cut you open!" Afterwards, his staff claimed "he always does RNYs openly" which was not what I was told. Based on those lies and his refusal to call my ins company to ask them to let me stay and extra day (I was discharged 30 hours after surgery with a 9in open wound) I no longer speak or am in contact with my surgeon.

But yeah, my dad just had RNY and his surgeon told him if he ran into complications, then he would switch to open. I just wish I had known it was even a possibilty, then I wouldve been prepared as far as recovery was involved.

Yes insurance paid for it. But would not pay for an extra day in the hospital.

they normally have you sign a pre op permission form and tell you if something goes wrong they will convert to open...but it sounds like your doc just does open, so why did he sell you lapro...? sounds like a con man.... :o

I am having surgery on the 22 of Aug. My sugeon told me that becasue I had Lap Band removed removed last August, and because of the scar tissue involved, he may have to do a "hand assist". He explained that it would be a 2 and 1/2 inch incision. I'm not sure if that helps.

Exactly. My dad just had RNY recently and his doc had him sign a form and explained to him that if he ran into complications then it would be done openly. I despise my surgeon and have not seen him since my 1st follow up visit. He also told me that the pill I was on was 100% effective and I got pregnant 2 weeks post op. I'm thankful to be finally having a baby and to have lost weight but my experience was horrible.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
