Low white blood cell count?

Recommended Posts

I got a call from the surgeons office yesterday saying that my low white blood cell count is low and I needed to get my labs redrawn. My question is, has this happened to anyone else and will it effect my surgery date? i am healthy other than being morbidly obese

I am not a doctor, but I'd be worried when white blood cells are too high, that means that body is constatnly fighthing - white blood cells are disease-fighting cells.

Also, not all ethnic groups are in the same range of what is consoder to be normal (ie Caucasian women to have white blood cell counts that fall slightly below the normal reference ranges), plus different laboratories classify low white blood cell counts differently.

I am thinking surfeon may be concerned because low white blood cell count puts you at higher risk for bacterial infections... Do not be too concerned, do what he tells you to do, I am sure this is just a precaution.

Good luck!!!

No, I haven't been sick. The only thing I can think of is I might have had pink eye.

I realize this was originally posted a year ago! But I just got some bloodwork back from my general practitioner, and she said my white blood cell count is low. I was just wondering what did your surgeon tell you? Did you have to postpone your surgery? Did they give you advice on how to increase it? I will make an appointment with my surgeon/nutritionist next week, I just wanted to be prepared.

I am supposed to have my surgery in August, currently doing the 6 month medically supervised weight loss.

Thanks and hope everything is well with you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
