driving home right after surgery.

Recommended Posts

Where you able to drive yourself home? If you did, how long where you in hospital? I ask because my hubby doesn't drive and I'm trying to keep this a secret from people. I'm 200 lbs overweight and I'm not getting support for this. I'm getting "oh just diet you'll lose" yeah why didn't I think of that!

You will be on narcotic pain medications and unable to drive for at least a few days post-op. some places even make your driver sign that they're taking you. Sorry, but for safety reasons you're going to need an alternative plan :(

NO you will not be able to drive yourself home, you'll still be on pain meds. My stay was 2 days with no complications. BTW I'm almost 3 weeks post op. I'm so sorry you don't have support from your family & friends! I joined this site about 4 days ago & I've seen the love everyone gives to one another so I think you have come to the right

place! What I can say is, if you have made your mind up please don't let transportation stop you!! Take a taxi!! Heck if your in my city Concord NC or close by I'll be more than happy to drive you there and pick you up!!

Oh that's so nice! but I'm way the heck in Chicago. I am not letting it stand in my way no worries. I like this site I can see it's the right place for me. I will be talking to.my PCp next week about praying she's on board. Along with the insurance Co My hubby supports it. But family is livid. Whatever it's my decision and I'm trying not to die before I'm 40!

Oooo :( yea I don't think I will make it to Chicago. Lol your husband is all that you need!! I only told my family and 2 friends about my surgery because people can be so negative sometimes. I will keep you in my prayers, I know everything will work out! I am 38 & I felt the same way, I wanted to live!!!

I'm in the same situation. My husband doesn't drive because of his vision. I'm hoping my oldest son will have his license before my surgery. I just have to quit being a paranoid mom and take him to take the test. Lol. I hope something works out for you. Maybe someone from your local support group would be willing to drive you home.

Are there any cab services in your area? Also, see with the hospital about driving options --- if they have a bus or something for patients in need of transportation help. Might cost but might be worth it. Also, if you are part of a local support group or seminar, ask the group if someone would be willing to pick you up if you pay them for the gas. Good luck, hope it works out for ya!

My hubby is in charge of that one. If it's too pricey I may work up the courage to spill the Beans to a friend only prob is that nothing is secret for long. They will either support or I'll never hear the end of it. I've read stories here where friends don't understand and the stress of it ruins friendship. Idk I will work it out. Thanks though for the support.

A taxi

B hospital transportation

C ask a friend if they can pick you up & tell them a lie. You went in for a MRI and since you were so nervous they put you to sleep & they won't aloud you to drive home.

If you need to tell a friend, then make sure you are confident while talking to them. Speak boldly and confidently and that will help them see that this is what you are doing for you!

Here in Albany our local public tranportation has something called the STAR Program. It's a really small *Accessible* bus that picks you up at your home with an advance notification. So like you can't call them like a taxi but you can reserve them up to 14 days before you need them. And it is under $3 each way.

I don't know exactly where you live but if you look up "Para-transit service" for your area you might find a service at a very resonable price.

If you do need a friend to transport you. Why not just tell them you are having a minor gastrointestinal procedure because you've been having complications with your digestive system. :-) Not really dishonest but maybe you can avoid the bypass conversation until you're ready to talk about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
