Hey everyone! I am 6 days post op today. I am doing really good with eating Jello and Popsicles, but for some reason it hurts to drink liquids. After a few drinks which I do space out I feel as though there is a huge gas bubble that is caught in my throat. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned? I eat a lot of Popsicles and this doesn't seem to bother me. But not sure if this is normal. Thanks for the help!!!!

What kind of liquids are you talking about?

If it is Water try either making it colder or making it warmer. I had to have my Water ice cold after surgery.

I had an issue with drinking liquids after surgery as well. I had to take a deep breath to get it to go down. Almost like a drain with no vent that has to "burp" to let the Water down. Sometimes it was painful. But it went away after a few weeks.

Thanks for the help. I feel a lot better. I have learned I probably was drinking too much and that I have to really sit up straight when I drink, the more I lounge the painful it Is. But I'm doing much better and am getting down a lot more fluids than I was! Thanks!

I really never sipped after surgery. I tried but just couldnt. I took norml drinks and never had a problem. I can now take several normal drinks in a row 3 months post op. Once in a while when im really thirsty, I will drink too much too fast and get pain in the chest area. I then will just sit up straight and breath deeply till it goes away. Definitely not a fun feeling!

Ditto...almost exactly. As long as I don't 'chug' I'm golden, even with 4-5 semi-large swallows.

After my surgery... When I woke up I would start my day out with hot tea. It really seemed to help with starting my drinking off. Since it was warm u was only able to sip it and since it tasted so delicious.. I kept at it and sometimes made a 2nd or third cup in the morning.

I could not drink cold beverages. It would hurt. Room temp and/or hot beverages went down well. When I'm drinking Water, it hurts if I drink 2-3 gulps at a time. I can only gulp water once every few minutes. I'm only 3 weeks post-op and I cant wait till this drinking gets better!!!!!!

I know! I can't wait either. It amazes me that I have no problem with food but can't drink!! But I'm like you I can only drink Water every few minutes. But I know and keep telling myself, we will get there!!!

I am almost 4wks post op, and I have the same problem with fluids. I have to drink Water when its ice cold and with a squeeze of lemon/lime. I can also tolerate hot tea...anything luke warm does not sit well with me at all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
