Protein shake makes me sick!

Recommended Posts

Im 9 days post op, and just started my Protein Drink yesterday. .and when i drank it i got really really sick...i thought i was going to throw up..and yesterday i made it with milk so i thought maybe it was the milk, but i just made some again today with water....and same thing happened! Just not as bad because i only took 3 sips because i was scared..Is this normal? I was drinking Protein Drinks before surgery and i was just fine...maybe i just need to try a different kind. Although i hate to spend money on something i wont be able to drink..ugh

It's hard to get a lot of things in, in the beginning. Take it slow but keep trying the Protein is VERY important. Best Wishes and Congrats!

I am having the same problem. Loved the Bariatric Advantage shakes prior to surgery. I am now 3 days post op and it is a struggle to get my Protein in. My tastes have changed...even the texture of it makes me sick. Have tried different flavors with skim milk or Water. Even plain water makes me sick, tastes very bitter. Loved it before surgery. Strange how things change. Not really sure what to do. May call the office monday if i'm still having problems.

I had problems with liquids for a good week. I finally started drinking lots of warm, Decaf tea with a hint of lemon and packet of truvia to sweeten the deal... It worked for me... For Protein, someone here advised me to buy whey Protein Shots at Walmart, it is 42 grams of protein, but disgusting in taste (well, some like it). It is 3/4 of my daily goal, so I like that...

I had the same issues post op and for about 6 months I really struggled to get in my Protein. 95% of the time I did not. Finally something just clicked and I found something that worked for me. I only have to drink 4 oz so for me it is one big gulp. I stand over my sink in the am and drink it real quick and then go brush my teeth. I have found other ways to get in my protein that I do not have to worry about taste. Double pasteurized egg whites are the easiest way to do that. You add them to any drink and you never know it is there. Sometimes we have to be creative in order to get in our protein.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
