Weight gain in hospital! Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I came home from the hospital on Friday after gastric bypass revision from lapband on Tuesday and I had gained 19#'s. I know that it is from all the fluids given to me while in the hospital, but it still feels like a set back. I was very swollen and that has gone down and I have lost 17 of the 19#'s. but it looks like at my one week f/u on Thursday I will probably just barely be below weight day of surgery? Did anyone else experience this.?

I was up 12lbs after surgery. I read about how that happens from all the fluids you get so I was prepared for it, but it's still a bit of a blow when you see it. It goes away fast! :-)

I just got out of the hospital for an unrelated issue..up 14 lbs omg...bad food, no exercise and fluids.I didnt eat much but had to bring in my own Protein Powder and Vitamin Water after two days...they brought me full sugar ensure protein! Yikes! Granted, this was a different hospital than the one in which I had my bypass, but trying to get a nut. consult was ridiculous. I don't think they ever even called my bypass surgeon, yet they kept fretting over how little I ate...ok, rant over.

I think that is horrible! They should be trained in every kind of dietary situation and have the proper food for you! You are there to get better and healthy, and proper nutrition is key! They have diets for cardiac and diabetics. They shouldve been able to cater to our simpler diet!

They had regular food, diabetic, and cardiac. I was on the cardiac diet....no salt, but plenty of carbs! The lack of Protein supplements I could tolerate was the most ridiculous. Then I needed special permission from the docs to bring in my own Protein. They wanted to have me mix it with full- sugar fruit juice....NOT! The weird thing is after all this, they constantly talked about how little I ate...well, duh! Give me something I can actually eat! Not looking forward to going back in.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
