Surgery postponed due to pregnancy

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This is my first time posting here, although I lurked for a while. I need some advice about my current situation.

I weigh about 270 and have been overweight for most of my life. I am married and have 2 boys (7 and 5). At one time I wanted a third baby but my husband did not. So, we started making other plans. We both enrolled in grad school and got our master's degrees. We changed jobs and bought our dream house. Then, I finally decided it was time to do something about my weight and started looking into gastric bypass.

Earlier this year I started going through all of the steps to get ready for the surgery. The Friday before Memorial Day, all of my requirements were complete and the surgeon's office submitted the paperwork to my insurance. The surgeon said that I could probably have it approved and scheduled by the end of June, which works out great because I'm a teacher. THEN - two days later - I realize my period is late. Take a test, and yep - I'm pregnant. I'm due Feb. 2.

Needless to say, we were both floored. I know it's selfish, but all I could think about was that I was going to have to postpone the surgery. That didn't last long, though. We're very excited about the baby coming. Even my hubby, who never said he wanted a third child, is over the moon about it. However, he made a promise to me that I would get the surgery as soon as possible after I have the baby. He knows how important the surgery is to me.

I called the surgeon's office when I found out and told them I would have to wait. (The nurse laughed and said it happens a lot!) She said I'd just have to come in again when I was ready, that I wouldn't have to repeat any steps. But here's my question - how long will I have to wait after the baby comes? Does anyone have experience with this? Google searching only brings up topics on the opposite (getting pregnant after surgery). I don't want to call up the surgeon and bug them about when I'm still such a long way off from having it done. I did ask my OB yesterday, but he said that he really wasn't sure. He did mention waiting until I was done breastfeeding. But, with my other two I had very low supply and only breastfed for about 2 months. My big question is: if I have the baby around Feb. 2, would it even be feasible to think about surgery next June? Since I'm a teacher, it's really the only time I can do it. I don't want to have to wait a whole other year if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

It will be up to your surgeon and if your breast feeding or not. If it were me, I would breast feed for at least 6 weeks. Your body needs that much time to heal anyway, from there I would decide based upon how my milk was doing. Each pregnancy is different. With one I had enough milk for the whole flipping neighborhood, the other I didn't have enough and was forced to supplement from the beginning. Best of luck, sorry about the delay but what an awesome reason to need to wait. Congrats.

Congrats on your pregnancy, though I'm sure it's a bitter sweet thing.

I would give you and your baby a few months after the baby is born to heal and grow. :) I hope you have a wonderful healthy pregnancy. :)

I believe it is possible, especially if your bmi is high. Not sure if this is also true in your case, but I had my insurance approval only for 12 months, so unless yours is different, you may need to go through the pre-approval process again... Congrats on the pregnancy, my twins also postponed my plans for the surgery, though I wasn't approved yet at that time. Hope everything goes well!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy. You do want a 4th child? Unless you get your tube tight you will end up pregnant again after having WLS. I think it's better not to have more kids after this pregnancy tight your tubes & then have WLS you don't have to worry about yet another 4th pregnancy or anything. My suggestion & option only.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
