Afraid to run!

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm 60, 5 months post RNY and I've lost 58 pounds. I did my first 5k in April (walked). I want to run or jog. Badly. But I'm scared to even try. I only go to 2.5 mph on the treadmill. I have really short legs so that is fast for me. I'm short...4'10". Can someone help me figure a way to get over my fear of running? I've seen people fall on treadmills and that scares me. Thanks!

Hi Pam,

I had never run before but I downloaded an app called C25K (couch to 5k) and it trains you for running 5K, I am on week 3 and feel amazing.. I just registered for my first marathon that will happen in November and I am super excited! I strongly recommend the app, it works with intervals, however I do walk/run outside, not on the treadmill and it works perfect for me. Don't be afraid, you can do it, but I do recommend either the app or some guided training so you don't over do it. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress. :D

I want to start running aswell, I've been making excuses, saying that I'm not ready, it'll be too much blah blah blah. But I really want to, I'm just scared i guess.

I think we just have to dive in and do it, listen to our bodies so we know when to stop.

Good luck. :)

Thanks. I just downloaded the C25k app and will start tomorrow after work. I think I'll do it on the street rather than the treadmill. Appreciate the support. I will let you know how it goes!!

On Friday morning, While I was doing my morning walk I thought about this thread.

I was walking down the street, and contemplating moving a little faster, moving more of my body, progressing. I picked two points in the road ahead of me, about 100 feet apart, and made a deal with myself. I said "Okay, we're going to run starting on the first point and we're going to make it to that second point." And I considered this idea, the first point coming up as I'm still walking forward, and just said okay.

So, I did it, I started running, and it was really weird at first, then I got in to a good rhythm, and it was easy. I went past the second point, and ran until I was out of breath. It was pretty cool actually. I was really proud of myself.

I ran today too for the first time during my walk. It was for a very short distance and it was downhill but I run and I am happy about it :-)

Think I will look into that app too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
