4 weeks post-op and no sense of fullness

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 6/5/13. The first 10 days or so I didn't feel hungry at all so eating and drinking was quite a task. Since then I've developed the sensation of hunger but not fullness. I'm afraid of possibly overeating so I eat out of an under filled 1/2 cup container or a small bread plate. My dietitian said to try eating a little more to see if I begin to feel full. I tried but I am afraid or stretching my stomach or making myself sick. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

I am about three weeks and I feel the same way. I just take two or three bites then quit because I know my pouch should be full and I'm scared of overdoing it.

Someone posted regarding this issue earlier and there was a reply that actually it could be that the sensation of hunger these first few weeks/months might be head hunger. They say it will eventually go away. Someone also suggested to brush your teeth as this helps you to feel satisfied if you still feel hungry. Thought I would try this last one to see if it works. Hope you get more suggestions as I read a lot of post with the same issue. Good luck.

I don't have a problem with feeling hungry all of the time. I just don't get the sensation of full. That just means that I stop when I figure I should be full. I don't experience the "head hunger" as much as people say. I try to drink plenty of Water between meals. I actually don't feel hungry much at all. I'm trying to figure out what to do about not feeling full when I do eat.

I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one not feeling the feeling of being full. I never feel hungry really. And like the others, when I eat, I just stop when I think I should. So this is normal? I am a revision from a lap band and with that, there was sooo much restriction you knew if you took another bite you were gonna be sick. So I have enjoyed not experiencing that with my bypass, just wanted to make sure I was normal! Also, I had surgery on 6/19.

My best friend had surgery about 6 weeks before me and says that she also lacks the full feeling when she eats. I guess it's normal. The good part is like you I don't feel hungry most of the time either. It's not that if I don't cut myself off from eating that I have a desire to eat more or pig out. Frankly I get tired of chewing and tasting of the same thing for 30 minutes or more that it takes me to eat. I'm just seeking that signal to go off in my brain telling me that it's time to stop eating. I know that I have to eat (or supplement with Protein shakes) in order to meet my Protein requirements for the day. In most cases I'm sure that I am eating too little. I'll ask the dietician and surgeon again when I see them. I may just call the dietician before then to see what she has to say.

I am 4 months out and I don't feel hunger but I don't feel full either ... I can tell when I should eat and I just stop on my own when I think I should be full... It's hard because that was why I wanted the surgery cause I never felt full

I am experiencing the same thing. I am 2 weeks post op and definitely not hungry, but I also don't feel that stuffed feeling that others say they experience after only a few bites. As I'm trying to reach my Protein goals I see that I am now getting 600-700 calories a day, which seems more than others at this point post-op. I'm scared I'm eating too much.

5 weeks out. Never hungry, never full. I kind of wanted to feel stuffed after a few bites. Not feeling full makes my head want just one more bite....

I've had a few days were Im starving and I have also noticed that certain foods don't make me feel full but mashed potatoes an refried Beans do. My nutritionist says its normal to eat 6 times a day but no more then 1 cup at a time. But like tonight I had puréed chicken and I never felt full. Ive also noticed that I'm constantly craving refried beans. Does anyone know what that means? I also 2.5 weeks out and I've Been stalled the last 3 days.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
