Different Dr. requirements

Recommended Posts

I went to my second nutrition class last night and I am wondering why the requirements of the two doctors in the same office are so different post op. Our information folder had both docs requirements because the class has both of their patients together. My doctor wants you on pureed food before you leave the hospital on the 3rd day and the other wants you on liquids only until the 3rd week, then they can have pureed. My doc is going ice chips 1st day, Protein Shake and Jello or broth 2nd day and then pureed on the 3rd day. skipping the soft food stage all together. I didn't ask in class why they differ so much in their directions. My doc is the Medical Director at this hospital. Oh yeah my doc wants to see you 2 weeks post op and the other doc wants to see his patients 1 week post op. Uhhhhh should I be concerned about which is the better doctor. :)

I wouldn't worry if you've researched your Dr. They are all over the place concerning requirements. If you trust your doctor, I wouldn't worry.

All Doc's are different. Check the success, complication, mortality rate between the two. Make sure you are 200% comfortable with your choice and go for it. Don't try to make sense of the differences it will drive u nuts. Do what is right for u.

Best Wishes!

I would also ask, no question is off limits. We put our lives in their hands. I ask my surgeon about everything and he was upfront with me. I trust him... He did great with me no issues at all but we had discussed them all prior. Nobody is perfect doc will watch the patients closely the first 30 days.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Different doctors prefer different things and it may vary from patient to patient. I know in my seminar class it was pretty general for the requirements and then when I went to a support group I found that each patient is treated differently depending upon their medical need.Being the director I would imagine he has more experience possibly than the other doctor and is more apt to move you along more quicky. It's kind of like when you have your first child you are gentle and slow with caring for them and then out comes child 2 and 3 and you got the hang of it and realize that it doesn't take all that. There are guidelines and then there is reality.

Every Dr is different. I started puree on day two after three leak tests. To this day i never had a issue with any Protein, nor have i thrown up or gotten anything stuck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
