Worried about work retreat 2 weeks Post Op. Advice?

Recommended Posts

I have a mandatory overnight retreat for work scheduled 2 weeks after my surgery and I am scared to be away from home this soon after surgery. Am I being too optimistic to think that I will be able to make it through? Obviously, the common meals will be a problem, but I can make arrangements to get past that part. I am worried about my energy level and getting sick. I know that everyone's recovery is different, I was just hoping for some insight from others.

I bounced back from a C section fairly quickly... Not sure if that's comparable at all... And it was 14 years ago. Lol

I'm 4w5d post op now and every week is a marked difference in energy and what I can eat. At two weeks I was still getting fatigued very quickly. The two week mark was also the point where I moved from full liquid to soft foods. While I thought the progression to the new diet was going to open new doors of eating for me, I ended up going back to mostly Protein shakes and yogurt. If I ate anything else I'd get nauseous right away.

I ended up taking 5 weeks off of work and each day I still ask myself if I'm ready to return to a full day of work. At least I'm starting to feel normal more often than not.

Are you planning on returning to work soon after surgery? If so, please spend your time at home getting used to the schedule of eating/drinking Water on a regular basis. Returning to work can throw a wrench into your eating schedule and you'll really notice it if you go 4+ hours without food.

There are a few unknowns that you aren't going to be able to make decisions for until after surgery. You are also not going to know what type of pain you are going to be in at 2 weeks out, or if there may be complications which may mean more recovery time.

Good luck!

I camped in a tent in 25 degree weather sleeping on the ground 2 weeks post-op (for cub scouts)....it can be done. As long as it doesn't involve anything super strenuous and you prep for how you're going to eat and drink it truly can be done.

And yes, I almost froze to death and was miserable, but had no tummy issues. Just fatigued and colder than I thought was humanly possible.

I had a trip planned 2 weeks post op. It has worked out beautifully. Just rest when you need to.

I travel for work a lot. The problem is the schedule they have you on. I would try to get out of it with a DR note. I was soo tired at that point. It could be done but I know my Dr would not have cleared me.

Thanks for your replies. I never thought that the doctor may not even clear me to go. Sounds like I will just play it by ear and listen to my body. I think it will tell me what is right for me at the time.

Everyone is different. I was fine at two weeks, I went back to work 19 days after. Absolutely no problems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
