Err on the side of caution and call your surgeon!!!!

Yup, I agree with Kristy - make an appointment with your surgeon. Sounds like it could be a stricture (relatively easily treated) or it could be something minor that can be treated with medication. Either way, your doctor is the one to make that call. There is no upside to suffering needlessly.

Hey guys! I'm 5 years post op this month. With 365lbs gone, life is good! However i too am now experiencing the same thing. Pain to the point of passing out. I break out in a cold sweat, and i can feel these attacks coming on. Its gradual and then it climaxs into the cold sweat, nautious mess that i become for about 10 to 15 mins. It then gradually subsides.....gallbladder has been removed , endoscopy performed and other than atage 2 esophagitis, everything is great. Protonix helps, but hasnt cured. Any suggestions??

I am only 3 weeks out so I might not be much help, but I have been told to skip a day every week with my PPI (for you Protonix I take a different PPI), as I need stomach acid for better digestion. So yesterday was my first trial to skip my PPI and Oh Lord was I in pain by this morning??? I felt the same pain you described. So I think your pain has a connection with the Protonix. Ask your doctor if you might should up your daily dose or maybe change you for a different PPI. I am alleregic to pantoprazole such as Protonix, so I take rabeprazole based PPI and it seems to work. Again, just an idea, but do not panic just talk to your surgeon.

My surgeon told me in a regular follow-up appointment that a problem can sometimes develop with the small intestine. Apparently it can "kink" or develop a loop. She told me straight out that the pain can be, in some cases, very intense. She also said that it absolutely can be corrected but it does require surgery. I don't know if they can diagnose it with an endoscopy or not. You mentioned that you've been having the pain for about a year - have you discussed it with your surgeon? Severe pain of any kind, much less to the point of losing consciousness, should be regarded as serious. You may want to consider working closely and assertively with your medical team until you have a diagnosis and a plan for treatment.

I know it's been almost a year since i posted this question...LOL, thought i'd come back and let you all know that it was an ulcer. It would only feel better if i put something in my pouch to give the acid something to work on. I take an acid reducer everyday now and all is good :)

Did you not have to take acid reducer after your surgery? I have to take a PPI daily til the end of my life.. I am sorry you had to go through this, I am sure by now you feel brand new :)

I was not taking a PPI after my rny...dr. never said that i should. He asked it i was taking any pain killers besides tylenol and i wasn't. He knew right off what it was by the way i described the pain. Sometimes i go a few days and not take it...and i can feel that ulcer pain again. I suppose i will have to take it the rest of my life also.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
