Oh man, I think I made a mistake!

Recommended Posts

I was reading my pre surgery packet and it says till wake up with a catheter in. So I make a not so brilliant move and YouTube catheter ..... HUGE MISTAKE!!!!! I thought I was going to pass out and I still feel sick. I have cleaned many deer, ducks, and other critters without getting squiemish, but this about did me in. When I go into my pre-op appointment I am going to beg my surgeon to have it put in after I am out and removed right before I wake up.

I have watched the RNY surgery multiple times on youtube but I may never be able to go back to that site again.

Mine was put in while I was out. You will need it after surgery. They are pumping IV fluids into you and you'll have to pee quite often if not on catheter. You will be really out of it when you get into recovery and won't be able to really go to bathroom easily.

They took mine out next morning and it really isn't bad! I was scared but it was quick. I wouldn't say it felt good but not really painful either.

You'll be fine!

I agree with Jaqcueline.

They won't torture you with the catheter until you are knocked out like a light. If you are worried, remind them for your peace of mind. Remember, you can always say 'no' if something feels uncomfortable.

I did not have a catheter. My surgeon doesn't do it because the surgery takes so little time he feels it's not necessary. And it didn't seem to be. Ask yours. Maybe you are worrying for nothing.

Little known fact.... they chose to use Water boarding at Guantanamo because catheters was deemed too cruel... I will continue to hold out hope that the doc can be talked into taking it out before I wake.. my pitch is going to be it will be good motivation to get up and walking around. We will see how that goes.

I've had multiple catheters and really, it's annoying to try to move, roll, whatever, but otherwise just not that big of a deal (I've also put em in other people, again, no biggie). A little sting coming out but not terrible. Pulling the JP drain was like razor wire, pulling the cath, meh, no biggie. I DO like that they now put em in after you've passed out...more from an embarrassment standpoint then anything.

Catheters are no big deal. It is really not bad and doesn't hurt a bit. I've had many and can assure you will look back and laugh that you even worried about it. :)

Agree...no big deal having it taken out. Remember, you will probably still be on the morphine pump or some other pain meds when they come take it out. Don't stress out about it :)

My doc doesn't use them either! Feeling blessed not to have to deal w that. With that being said; I've had one before and it wasn't that big a deal. Burned a little once out the first couple times you pee but not horrible. You'll be fine :-)

This was also in my pre-surgical package but my Dr does NOT use them. When I asked him why it was in the package, he said that the package has a lot of standard pratices and precautions, but that he does not use them.

So before you wind yourself all up (as I did too), ask your Dr.

Also, in the hospital, I was VERY numb and had a very difficult time peeing regardless of how many hours I sat on and even fell asleep sitting on the bowl. By day 2, I was "threatened" by the nurses that if I didn't pee, they would have to put a cathater in before they could release me. I REFUSED and still could not pee. On the moring of day 3 (the day I was released), the numbess went away and I peed GALLONS.

I don't remember having any catheter so if I had one it was in after I was asleep and out before I woke up. I had to pee like 30 minutes after I woke up so I assume no catheter for me.

My doc typically uses them however he doesn't usually use them in people my age (31) unless they have bladder issues in the past. I asked him right before I went in for surgery if I had to have one and it was relief when he said no. Just ask. The surgery is so quick that I think alot of docs are opting out of using them now.

I have had many catheters and helped many nurses put in and take out many. It sounds way worse than the 3 min procedure

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
