Hello, I am one month away from surgery, a little worried about clots & post-op sag.

Hi

My main fear is clots- I am presently 105 kgs and I used to be 75 kgs- no wonder I feel huge. Why did the weight creep on! I cancelled two years ago thinking I could do it alone - hahaha- what are some strategies to avoid a big droopy tummy???

Alot of it depends on your genetc make up, although some say that if you lsoe gradually you are less likely to end up with excess skin. Our skin loses elasticity as we get older too. I fully accept that I will have excess skin, not happy about it but will deal with that if and when needed- I would not consider staying obese out of fear of excess skin.

As for clots, they do take precautions such as stocking to help with circulation in OT and post op. They will often give you a blood thinner injection in OT too to help prevent clots. There is a risk of clots with any surgery, but all these precautions plus getting mobile as soon as possible eg within hours post op will decrease the risk- if you are really concerned, talk to your surgeon

G'day Cleo

I go along with kebsa, so much depends on the elasticity of your skin, your age etc. However to add to what kebsa has already mentioned, we all know tummy exercises can help. Once your past 6 weeks post op, you could try some tummy exercises or ab work. I'm walking every 2nd day, I go to the pool 3 mornings a week and do 100 ab twist each night, I'm really hoping it will help when I get closer to goal :) I'll deal with any loose skin when the time comes, but meantime, I'm doing all I can to assist my weight loss and toning. I started my surgery at 124 kgs, you feel Huge at 105, I'm dreaming at when I can get back to 105, not far now :woot:

CHEERS and Good Luck :)

Sorry I forgot to mention the tummy excercises, they won't produce miracles if you have lost your skin elasticity but they certainly will help. They will provide a better foundation at least. I have read post from some people who have had tummy tucks when the get to goal, if their abdominal muscles are in good nick they can sometimes get away with a mini tuck where only loose skin is removed ( muscles do not need tightening), it is less painful and quicker recovery apparently.

Thankyou gals, this is an awesome site. Yes, weight is all relative but when the trend is endlessly upwards some drastic measures are required. I am so impressed by the positive and supportive comments - a girlfriend is having her op in July and I am going in on March 23 - so we will be a mini support group to each other by email -my BMI is constantly creeping up and not keeping time with my mental image or wardrobe!

Best wishes

Cleo,

I wouldn't worry to much about the clots...if your Dr is on the ball and thinks there may be a problem he should give you a prescription for shots for 14 days after surgery. I had to have a shot once a day for 14 days after surgery because of my size. I was banded in Sept. 06 and haven't had a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
