"Cheated" the Band - Is RNY Right for Me?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I have been banded since 2005. I lost 60 lb in the first two years and then went thru a period of esophageal dilation, fertility treatments, two miscarriages and two babies born......needless to say, I am right back where I started pre-band. My husband thinks the only reason I have not been successful with the band is because I "cheat" with it, as in I drink with food in order to get it down, I still drink carbonated bev. on occasion, I don't eat my Protein first, and I eat junk (cause as we all know it is the processed crap that slides down easily!) I am trying to convince him that the failure with the band is not all my fault....maybe it is....maybe if I had more willpower.....I don't know.....I am self pay, so I need to be certain that this is the right choice for me. I know many people who have had RNY and gained all the weight back - this cannot be what happens to me, but I am afraid that if I have not followed all the rules with the band I will eventually break the RNY rules. Did any of you "cheat" your band and now find with the RNY you are in compliance with a healthy eating plan and following the rules?

Yes, I was a huge banded sugar addict. People who were never banded don't understand that having the band and being a sugar addict is no different than failing to follow a traditional diet. The only thing stopping banded people from sugar is their willpower, which is obviously not very good.

The RNY is totally different. Don't follow the rules? Get miserably sick. I was converted to RNY 5/1/13 and have completely avoided sugar since then, and have no cravings for it. I have stuck to my diet exactly as told, with one exception. The other day I tried a piece of bacon and was so nauseous I had to leave my mother in laws and go get zofran. I learned, and won't do it again.

Pre-op I had the same reservations as you, but post-op there is no comparing band to bypass, and I would encourage any struggling bandsters to consider revision.

I had the band and had a lot of slider foods, but that's because I threw everything else up. I am 8 weeks out from my revision. Nothing makes me sick. I have eaten just about anything except Desserts because I don't like sweets to begin with. My bad foods are pizza and chips which I have had a few times since surgery. With the band I could wash down a family sized bag of chips, but with rny I just have a small handful. I have still lost 30 lbs though at this point.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
