stomach virus

Recommended Posts

ok, I know I have a "thing" about this issue. But its the single concern I had pre AND post surgery. What happens if we get a "bug"????

Any "old timers" ever had this happen???

My 8 year old just came home early from school with a possible stomach virus. So, I called my surgeon's office to get some nausea/vomiting med.'s so I could have them on-hand (incase I started these symptoms at 2am - like most people do). His office advised me to go in and get my fill pulled out and start the med's right now!!!!! (and of coarse I didnt)

But again, has anyone experiencd this "thrill"???

I haven't (and don't want to) experienced that yet. But you're wise to keep some suppositories on hand. Like you said, that always hits when you're least prepared! Also, plan on getting you and the whole family to get their yearly flu shots in October. No sense having something that can be prevented. One of the best ways to prevent illness is hand washing. Keep some no-soap antibacterial hand get or handwipes in your car and/or purse. Get the family into the habit of washing their hands as soon as they walk in the house. Hope you "missed the bug".:)

Definitely, in the event that you develop a stomach virus, getting your band unfilled is imperative. Many slippages have been caused due to a 'bug'. :)

It's funny you mentioned bug because around the fourth of July, I was sick with the bug for about 3 or 4 days. I called Melissa to see if it was something to do with the band... (I blame gas for alot of things) She called me some anti nausea meds out quick. It wasn't until after it was over and I was feeling well that I realized that I had a virus! I would just make sure that when you feel nauseated, call Dr. Speigel. He'll even call something out on the weekends. Well, that's what they told me anyways.

Marie... thanks for the tips!

Leatha... now THATS what scares me! I cant imagine having to drive an hour to my surgeons office vomiting my guts up (actually) to get my fill removed. And what happens to those whose surgeon is in Mexico????

Lisa.... Spiegel told me the same thing. But when you call his office afterhours, you get this answering machine - and it says if you have an emergency to go to the nearest ER. hmmmm...

Back in July, did you have ALL the virus symptoms? (I know this is yucky, but hey, this is real life!) How did your stomach handle it with the band? And (one more) how well/fast did the med's work? :sick

Please keep some suppositories on hand. At the first sign of nausea, use them. They'll help nip that throwing up in the bud.

After hours for Dr Spiegel if you call Doctors Hospital in Groves 409-962-5733 they will page him for him to call you. He will call you back....

This is exactly why it is so imperative to have local follow up care already arranged BEFORE having the band implanted out of the country OR moving away from your original band surgeon. Emergencies do arise. :)

I would definitely recommend you to ask for a script for Phenergran just in case, but if you vomit repeatedly, your band needs to be unfilled immediately.

I finally figured it was a virus when I put one plus one together. I threw up three times, my stomach hurt alot and I ran fever. The

Phenergran helped alot. After it was mainly over, my stomach was sore for a few days after. I think that Dr. Speigel's office should keep his patients better informed. Like that info Kelly gave on calling Doctor's Hospital after hours and other support resources. I've heard this complaint ever time I have been in his waiting room. When I've gotten info, it's usually a little bit here and a little bit there. Sorry, I got on my soapbox again.

NO apology needed... and thanks for your information. I agree with you 100% about his office.

Great thread. Prior to banding I asked my surgeon about the flu. They apparently gave me bogus info, cause they said occasional vomitting from a stomach flu won't cause slippage, but if you're vomitting every day for a week from eating wrong is when you run into problems.

I've had a pretty nasty stomach bug before, and you'd think one violent episode could blow the band, right?

Sorry for neglecting the boards lately. I obsessed on these boards from before getting my band, which has really put me behind at work. I'll try to get here at night - if not you guys gotta call me cuz what if I'm in the evil room where the fridge is instead of in here reading your posts?

Kelly, great hair! Lots of new cute faces around here, too!

After reading this post, I had my PCP phone in a Phenegran RX to have on hand. Hopefully, none of us will have this problem!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
