band to bypass how is everyone finding the weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I am a band to bypass patient, my surgery was 05/20/13. My highest weight pre band was 418 lowest weight w the band was 225. My presurgery weight for the bypass was 278. My doctor advised that weight loss would be slower for me than it would be for someone with the bypass as their native surgery. Now at 10 days out I'm down 14 lbs...for any other conversions how are yall finding the weight loss?

I had the band before as well. The band made my gastric bypass surgery a bit more difficult as I had a lot of scar tissues and adhesions. I had surgery on April 1st. So far I have lost 30lbs. I get quite a bit of stomach pain but it feels mostly like hunger pain even though I don't feel hungry. Also I get quite a bit of nausea. Nonetheless this is a much better surgery for me. I had soapy complications with the band that cost me so much money over the years and then ending up not paying a dime for this surgery as it was covered. You mention that you doctor said your weight loss might me slower because you had the band. Well I was never told that and I think my weight loss has been reasonable.. I wish you all the best.

Just had my band removed last week, now on the journey to bypass. I too was told weight loss with the bypass would be slower, not because I had been banded, but because I had lost and still losing weight, that those remaining pounds that get you to a normal weight would be slower. I have about 50 lbs remaining if they let me go that far.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
