Got Banded August 7th

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Well I did it....on August 7th. The surgery only took 15 minutes but the recovery is on going. I have been on liquids since last Thursday but last night I almost past out because I am not getting enough calories with juice.

Here's how my diet is supposed to work this week: 800 calories a day. 2oz of juice every 2 hours. Well if I drink 7 times in one day which would cover 14 hours then that would equal 28 fl oz. I don't know of any juice that would give me 800 calories for 28 oz!! I think that is the reason I feel queezy. I am sort of frustrated that the nutritionist (whom I will email next) would tell me to eat 800 calories with just juice. Any recommendations are welcome.

Last night I almost past out so my fiance made a one scrambled egg. I tell you it has never tasted soooooo good. I was full, immediately felt good and satisfied.

I think doctors tell you to get on liquids for 2 or 3 weeks to give you a drop in weight and keep you up beat. I read in the MidBand book and the patient is supposed to go back to regular food on the fourth day... but you have to chew, chew, chew.

Anyone have any experience with this? If I don't eat sufficient amount of food I get very very bad headaches and feel nausiated. So the juice thing is not working all that well.

Hi Mary,

Congratulations on your surgery! 15 minutes? Wow!

You know, juice isn't the only liquid there is. There are loads of different kinds of Soups that can provide you with Protein and the calories you need. Cream of chicken springs to mind, for example, and that's very filling as well.

Are you drinking any Protein drinks? The liquid thing is about letting your stomach heal, not starving yourself to death. I'm planning on stocking up on smoothie ingredients and spiking my drinks with Protein powder once I'm off of Clear Liquids. Your doctor seems to have recommended a more strict diet than many; my doctor's program allows full liquids (as opposed to clear) two days out and soft/mushy foods after that whenever I feel ready.

I didn't do real well on just Clear Liquids, but didn't have to stay on them long. I would try some real runny Cream of Wheat with Sanalac (powdered milk) added to the Water to add Protein. What makes ME feel so much better during all this is protein, protein, PROTEIN!! I have tried various Protein Drinks to supplement my diet, and they really do help. Tomato Soup is comforting as well as tasty! Those cream Soups did the trick to satisfy me when I was still on liquids. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
