Strength training?

Recommended Posts

So I am 5 weeks post op RYN, 3 weeks post op bowel obstruction. I am ready to slowly start adding strength training but I'm a rookie... Does anyone have a suggestion where to start? Does yoga count as strength training? I don't have a gym membership and I'm not ready to get one yet.

I joined the YMCA years ago I pay $67 bucks a month for my daughter and I. They have tons of free classes that come with the membership (ex. Cycling, Aerobics, Cross training, total body sculpt, Yoga, Kickboxing, Zumba etc) Plus the work out area, you get a free session with a trainer, pool etc.

For us that is about $33.50 per month each and we do the classes togeather and have fun!

Start out slow, walking and built up. In the beginning just walking wore me out, last saturday i did kick boxing... I thought i was gonna die LOL but I made it through

Yoga is an awesome form of strength training. I work out like crazy like walking, jogging, calistetics, ankle and wrist weight exercises, medicine ball and I just started yoga a few days ago.

Let me tell you that the yoga has gotten me the most sore out of all the exercises. I felt every single muscle in my body hurt later that day. It was also too the most relaxing form of exercise. My daughter and I walked 4 miles and then I let her play at the park while I did yoga in the shade. I LOVED IT!

I'm planning to do it again today.

Go on YouTube and theres several workouts you can stream from your phone. You hold he positions so you're able to pause your phone between moves.

I'm just starting with light weights for toning. I used to lift seriously so I'm looking forward to it...somewhat limited by chronic pain issue..

Definitely yoga!!! You can try some light 3-5 lb weight exercises at home. I bought some Biggest Loser dvds and used those at home with weights until I was ready to get into the gym. I now use all weight training machines and cables at the gym. I love it, but definitely start light!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
