Brachioplasty --(arm lift)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Has anyone had this surgery, and if so would you please share what all is involved?

my "bat wings" have gotten worse and worse over the years and i probably would qualify for this surgery now....but will wait.

i have trouble with clothing....blouses etc. fit except in the upper arms and i usually have to get a size larger.

i live alone and am concerned about the after care with this....such as being able to bend the arms and being able to take care of toilet needs.

Thanks for any info.

cal---who could fly around the earth with my arms flapping wildly!

I hope someone replies! I am rather anti-plastic surgery, but this is one I would consider. I admit to not exercising enough, but my arms are in SAD shape..flap...flap

I had it done about 3 years ago. I had gone from 240 to 145 two times and new arms were like gum, and hanging down.

You have to wear an arm garment for 6 weeks which was uncomfortable, but I think I should have shopped around for one I liked better.

My stiches tore open on one arm and I had to have it fixed. The scarring is not pretty. I gets better after a few years. But looks better than the bat wings. I plan on getting micro derm abrasion or some sort of scar treatment one day.

But, I am glad I did it.

It is hard when you have little ones like I did.

Also, massaging of the scars helps a lot. It hurts like hell though.

Hope this helps!

I heard it is painfull... a few years ago.. Oprah talked about it, but then decided against it because of the scars and pain.

My arms are one of my biggest problem areas!!!!!!!!!!

I saw on TV about a new method. They go under the arm and pull the skin up. No scars down the arm like with the current method. I will have to have this done as I take off now in a heavy wind. You might want to shop around and read up on the new method.

I have had this done. I would do it again. The scars are much better than the big ole arms. It wasn't bad. My kids arn't little so I didn't have to worry about that. I went to a christmas party the day after. The pain wasn't bad. I think the lapband was more painful than this and that wasn't bad either.

Thanks to all for sharing.

i keep reading about post surgery and not being able to bend your arms. If this is correct, how does one handle toilet needs? i live alone and would need to bend my arms to take care of toilet necessities!

Hi Cal!

The arms a little sore and because of the garments around them are a little hard to bend but it doesn't hurt to bend them. I had no problems with toilet needs at all!

I'm having this done in December, as a combo with my outer thigh lift. I was told that many WLS patients won't qualify for the technique with incisions in the armpit only because our bat wings extend too far down. I asked if I could have the "armpit only" incision if I was willing to accept some improvement, but not perfect improvement. The answer was no -- that if your arms are so far gone that you need the full incision, you're not a candidate for the lesser surgery (apparently it leaves funy results that way with a tiny upper arm and a remaining bat wing below).

Definitely consult with your own surgeons, as your bat wings may not be as bad as mine, but thought you'd want to know it's not a "new" or "alternate" technique for the exact same surgery.

I'll post pics in December!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
