Hello post-oppers. I'm having surgery June 5th. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas to share about what I should be doing now to prepare

1) for my hospital stay and

2) for my first week back when it seems (from checking out others who have recently had surgery) I will be less up and about.

I have no children; just my husband and I at home. I also am an educator so when I go out for surgery on the 5th I'm done going into work until mid-August. Just in case that help someone tailor their tips to me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Grocery shop before you go in so everything is there foe you when you return, fill all prescriptions, LEGGINS were the best thing for me... when I hade to leave the house for doc appointments I didn't want anything buttoned on the belly.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

The best thing I ever took to the hospital with me is my back scratcher! :) for the hospital I also took my own pillow, toiletries, slippers (for walking the halls), and bath robe. I wore yoga pants, a tshirt and flip flops to the hospital so I could wear them home.

I think everyone has covered it.

Toiletries are a must. I felt so much better after I had a shower. I went a full day of walking around before I remembered I had my flip flops. Such a game changer after I could walk around in something besides the booties. A robe would be good, or at least ask them to give you something that works like a robe while you walk around. I brought some loose-fitting knit pants with me to the hospital to wear home. But I ended up calling Will and asked him to bring me a dress to wear home because they elastic waist was too much against my incisions on my waist. I wore a dress the first two days I was home and it was very good.

I brought my iPad, S3, and laptop to entertain during the longer times of doing nothing at the hospital. I didn't end up taking out my iPad because it was too much stimulation. When Will would go home for the night, I had him take the laptop and iPad with him, keeping the valuables away from the hospital. The only thing that stayed with my was my phone and my charger. You may want to ask if the hospital has a safe that you can put your kindle in.

When you are in the hospital, ask for Water whenever you can and don't use a straw. The straw can get more air into your stomach and you don't want that. I had a hard time getting enough Water while I was at the hospital.

I forgot to include... I took my phone and charger but nothing else electronic. If I used the tv there I was usually asleep within 15 minutes of turning it on and my phone I hardly touched. For me I didn't like the bright light and stuff. I thought if be posting updates on here like so many people, but I just didn't feel up to it.

As far as food for when you get home. I bought a lot of stuff and most of it is still sitting in my cupboard. I ended sending my husband out for the stuff I found I could tolerate, which for me wasn't much (it still isn't). I'd just get a few of the things you know you like now and hope you'll still like them post op. I lived off SF Popsicles and Jello and the only Protein I could stomach was Unjury chicken Soup.< /p>

Thank u all for ur recommendations. I will be at the hospital at least two days. And I don't want to take unnecessary stuff. Looks like there isn't much I need to get for afterward since my "tastebuds" might change. So I'll play that by ear I guess. I'll have broths and sf Popsicles on hand though for sure. And Water or course. LOL.

If you think of anything else please let me know.

I packed a robe to wear over the Johnnie when I walked the halls. I had bought new slippers but didn't need them because Toby Hospital provided non-slip slipper socks. I brought my glasses and a case, and also my contacts and solutions. For toiletries I brought Shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant, all of which I didn't use because I was not allowed to shower. I brought toothpaste and a toothbrush and lip balm which I did use. I brought a hairbrush. I brought my tablet w/charger and my phone w/charger - I used them both. I brought a book but only used it while I was waiting pre-op. I brought my own pillow (a tip I got here). The pillow helped me sleep more comfortably and protected my tummy on the drive home. It was suggested that I bring my WLS manual, which I did, but I never had to look at it.

After surgery you cannot eat or drink. When you are allowed to eat and drink they provide all that you need.

Also, for home, I didn't stock up on much. I had crystal light, yogurt, whey Protein isolate, Atkins ready-to-drink shakes, broths and cream Soups. I bought enough to get me through one/two weeks. I didn't know what I could tolerate afterwards. Today is my first day home. liquids are really all I want, broth is delicious! The yogurt I tossed after a few bites.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
