EXCERISE IDEAS NEEDED

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been a member for the past 2.5 months and I have lost 50 pounds since my surgery but my problem is this: I need to start excercising and I do not know where to start. I know this seems silly but I have been extremely overweight for the past 12 years and had a job where I mostly sat at a computer. I now have knee problems and when I stand for more that 15 or 20 minutes my knees start to hurt. I had been thinking that losing 50 pounds would be a bog help and it has the pain in my knees do not seem to be getting better as fast as I was hoping. The past almost 3 months I have not been doing too much excercising and I need for this to stop.

Can anyone recommend an excerise tap for someone like me? I really need help before it is too late. I need to start something ASAP.

Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

Cheryl

I was exactly in your situation before surgery. I could not walk or stand for longer than 8 minutes. I have also lost about 50 pounds. It may sound cliche but motion is lotion. My knees and hips and lower back used to hurt so bad. Walk. Walk till it hurts. Then push thru and it stops. Took me about 1/4 mile to get past the hurting. Now my lower back pain is gone and about 95% of my knee pain. I can walk now for over 1 1/2 hours and recently walked my first ever 5k. I am 60 years old. YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!!

Talk to a trainer about low impact workouts. Like Water arobics and the like.

I have chronic pain, and I hurt when I have any impact...my pain is in my chest wall so if I do exercise where I have to hold up my trunk for any length of time, it hurts. Swimmimg is the answer for me. Before surgery I did Water aerobics and on off days I would tread water vigorously (to the point where my heartrate got up) for 45 minutes four times a week. Can't wait for my incision to heal to get back to it. In the meantime I walk. I also ordered some low impact toning weight work out dvds to try...we'll see how they go. recumbent bike might work for you too.

Yes, with summer coming it should be easy to find a pool to use. i bought an above ground a few years ago so I could exercise in peace. I wear a cami swim top and then boy shorts. Like, literally boys swim shorts. Why do they not have to show their thighs but we're supposed to? Hell no. I cut the mesh out and feel comfortable.

Anyway, I had an acl reconstruction and the other knee is pretty bad too. I use the elliptical and it never hurts them. So if you have a gym or curves or something around, you might thy it and see.

I found a gym closing and bought a commercial one for $600. It should last me a lifetime and it's so amazingly smooth riding.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
