All of my post op friends. I haven't been nervous for anything since I started this process. I have surgery on June 5th. The only thing I'm fearing is the JP drain. Holy moly does that worry me! What does it feel like??? Does it hurt?? What about when they pull it??

When I woke up from surgey it was in. I had to come home with it a few days. It was annoying showering and everything but no pain. NOW when they take it out doc said take a deep breath he cut the stitch and pulled it out. It's really far in u will b surprised and u will feel it being pulled up in your chest area. It's the strangest feeling ever. It's not really painful just shocking its in so far and up so far. It's over really quick and I was happy to have it out.

Don't worry about it, it will b okay and come out quick ;)

I just had surgery on May 24th and had a drain put in didn't know I had one until the nurse came to empty and record the amount in it ,doesn't hurt, not in the way ,it's cool with me I have some swelling and pain on my left side , I don't know if its gas or what but omg it brought tears to my eyes!!! I've been walking I've notice the pain gets really intense about an hour before my next dose of pain meds so I'm I think I'm letting the pain get ahead of me .i suppose to take 15ml every four hours ,well that scenario isn't working so I'm either going to up the dose or move the time up Any suggestions?

I never had a drain. The catheter was bad enough! I still miss my pain pump.

My drain didn't bother me unless I was up walking but it wasn't pain just an annoying feeling. When they pull it out....the strangest damn feeling ever. It feels like its unwrapping your insides. I was told to just keep breathing and it was over in 10 seconds. Didn't hurt just weird. One feeling I may never forget.

Not pleasant but over in 5 seconds...I had chest tubes in for an open heart surgery in 2000 ( about 5x the size of the JP drain) and those were an adventure to get pulled! Don't let the fear become the worst part. It helps if you bear down a little and breathe our when they pull them. And you'll feel better when it's out.

No drain, catheter or pain pump here. I had surgery 9 weeks ago and haven't taken so much as a tylenol since the day after surgery. I'm fascinated by the differences in procedure from surgeon to surgeon I've seen on these boards.

I forgot to ask my surgeon about a drain. I know I won't have a catheter. They stopped using a catheter because the surgery doesn't take long, only 1-1 1/2 hours.

I just had a catheter til the next morning. No drain or pain pump thank god. My surgeon likes his patients up and moving and thats exactly what i did. I stayed in recovery for 45mins. Got to my room around one something and wad walking the halls at 5. I only adked for pain meds once. I really didnt have any pain. It was just uncomfortable. I didn't have any nausea whatsoever. My surgeon said i was his dream patient lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
