My port is a pain!

Recommended Posts

I can always feel my port. When I close my car door, sleep, bend over... You name it. This is such a pain. My surgery was about 9 days ago... So I'm new at all this. I could be just swollen, or this is something I just wasnt aware of...Will this ever go away?

My port was like that for awhile after surgery. Your body is still adjusting to the port and the band so give it some more time. I had my surgery in April and then had port revision surgery in July (my port was tilted). I am just now getting to where I can't feel the port but every now and then I feel a little pain shoot through the area. It is normal from what I have been hearing.

The "feeling" of the port will lesson over time, but you will probably always be aware of the port but shouldn't feel pain.

You are still recuperating from surgery.

My port was placed right between my 2 belly rolls and got pinched every time I sat down. It was pretty miserable for a few weeks. Now that the belly rolls are smaller :) my port doesn't bother me at all. It just took some time. It's fairly common to have soreness in the port area for a longer time than the other incisions.

Hope yours improves quickly.

My port was quite noticable and uncomfortable for the first two or three weeks. After I lost about 30 pounds I did not notice it any more and now I really only notice it when I dig around there with my fingers and occasionally when I lift something heavy I sort of feel it but it does not hurt or anything. Just give it time and yours will probably settle too. ;-)

Hi. I too am allways aware of my port. It is kinda of a bother. My port was sore for several weeks after surgery but now there is no pain I am just aware of it and can feel it anytime I touch it. Give a few more weeks. Best wishes...Janie

I found that one of the ladies in the support group described the pain as bruised. I am aware of it especially when I'm lying down and especially when I see the cat is about to jump on me! I find myself very protective of the port area. It was sore for it seemed like a month. You have stitches which need to heal.

My port bothers me anytime I wear jeans or tight fitting clothes around my waistband. It also bothers me during exercise. It's right where I need to bend to do certain machines or stretches. :)

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I havent given myself enough time to heal. I guess since the rest of me was healing so well, I thought that the port area would heal at the same rate. Good to know I'm not alone!

do any of you have the low profile port?? it is so small and after you lose a lot of weight, you may want to change. i was banded 06/13/02, so the low profile port might be the only one they use now??? it may also depend on where your surgeon placed your port. i have heard of it being placed in several different areas.

the reason for me changing to the low profile, was because i had a port leak 6 months post op (this was found when i had an appt for my 2nd fill). when they got me into surgery (local anes), they found my plastic piece that comes off the port had totally broke in half. i never felt a thing. so they went ahead and switched the port and its great. very small and comfortable. my first fill 6 wks post gave me bad news too. they couldn't get the needle in the port and so i had to have it done under fluoro. they found that my port sutures busted and my port flipped over on its side. so that was fixed ..... the good news is i lost my first 60 lbs with my band totally empty (although i never knew it was) and i would do it all over again in a minute. life is good.....

hi janie & everyone. i just signed up yesterday. this is my first time to get on anything like this although i've been banded over two years. i lost 95 lbs in 15 months & my life has definitely changed. size 20 - size 8.....i now have 3.1 cc's in my band but don't believe i would ever have another one. food gets pretty limited when you have this much in your band. i'm still fighting my way through all the emotional eating habits that i have owned for 49 years, so that in itself has been a struggle for me. i had my band done in canon city. dr's wagner/brown were the first surgeon's in colorado to do the band, & i thought this is my last chance at being thin. i never did any research or even considered the gastric bypass. i just did it :) we started a support grp here & i have made a lot of good friends. we cheer each other and struggle together but we are all bonded together. we know and understand all the stuff. its so great to get into this group though. thanks for asking about me.....

I'm an expert on problem ports. I don't even have one. I was banded 5/5/05, but my port area never healed. It's normal to have some discomfort, but if the area is hot, tender, swollen, or badly painful, make sure to see your doctor. My port incision became infected a week after my surgery, but my doctor blew me off and told me it was normal. This went on for several weeks, and they kept telling me, "Just give it time." But eventually it got so bad that the tubing popped out of my belly. By the time I got to my doctors office, there was an entire 1 inch loop of tube sticking out of my skin. They had to remove my port.

Your problem is probably normal, but ports are nothing to mess around with. Donali had to have her port fixed after reaching too far (she kinda bounced to give herself the extra push to reach something.)

Just like if you have breast implants, you'd want to be a little more careful. Same thing here - be careful reaching, lifting, exercising. Love your port and your port should love you (even though though mine didn't love me.)

Oops, I didn't mean to worry anyone! It's just that we have a foreign device in our bodies, and an ounce of prevention is worth pound$ of cure.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
