Chotz714 5 Posted May 19, 2013 Hey guys! Had a long talk with my doctor the other day and I'm trying to determine whether I do the sleeve vs bypass. So why'd you guys pick the bypass? Some feed back would be awesome
abarmann 0 Posted May 19, 2013 My insurance would not cover the sleeve..only band or rny bypass. I already had the band for 7 years so did the rny this time. I have a friend who did the sleeve...seems to be working well for her. Dr told her she can do the bypass portion later if she needs to.
music1618 879 Posted May 19, 2013 My doc said I could do the sleeve, and always return for the bypass. I only wanted one surgery and figured I should go for everything. I liked the idea of malabsorption with bypass. My reason for having the bypass was to get off of steroids. I figured if I was still taking them after the surgery and my hunger was not changed at least I would not absorb all the calories.
Nel 189 Posted May 19, 2013 Research. I wasn't a candidate for the sleeve or band. Only switch or bypass. Sleeve: high chance of acid reflux *already had and guess what? None since bypass!* Higher chance of failure no long term research no malabsorption which I need more invasive as far as I'm concerned, they remove over 80% of the stomach and it's not reversible. I needed the threat of dumping. Oreos and cheetos are a weakness of mine. I even like them together. I could eat a pack of oreos with a cup of coffee. Dip, eat, dip eat. sigh And now I've met too many folks that are doing sleeve to bypass revisions oh and the gastric bypass is reversible if complications arise
kinsse 171 Posted May 20, 2013 Same here as with the sweets. I need the restriction. Ill b to afraid of dumping. N plus they use the esophagus part of stomach to make micro pouch. Which is the size of a grape and does not stretch like it use to ( which it still can just noy as fast). It use to be the size of a small egg. So I figure ill lose quicker.. My surgery should be in about 4 Weeks.

ArmyOfMe 82 Posted May 22, 2013 My insurance does not cover the VS procedure nor the DS. I think, right now, they don't consider them long term effective (whatever their bureaucratic thought process is), though, I kept reading they are in the works of approving the VS, but I don't know for sure and I don't keep up with it either. So, I chose RNY because my surgeon said I am not a good candidate for the lap band. I got over the lap band quick once I started researching more and more into the RNY procedure. I would not chose the sleeve even if it was possible. The thought of having a huge portion of my stomach cut off and knowing it's an irreversible procedure just didn't feel right. It is an effective procedure but def. not for me. In my case, RNY made more sense to start over and follow the path to a healthy happy life. Good luck. I hope you find what works for you!
