Hello everyone, my name is Louise, and I'm new to this site. I'm 48, married to a great man, and mother to a beautiful 6 year old son with autism. The reason I'm here is that for the last 4 years, I've been miserable with a lapband. I live on Soup, Protein Drinks, purees, soft foods, and ice cream. Even with that, I regurgitate and get food stuck multiple times a day, even Water and yogurt often get stuck-- this is with NO Fluid in my band. The first year was great, and I lost about 40 pounds, but then things started to go downhill with the band, to where I am today. I have finally accepted that this is not my failure- this is my band's failure!!

My surgeon and I decided that first and foremost, removal is a must, but he left the revision part up to me, or if I even wanted to do it at all. RNY, the sleeve, or nothing--I went back to the original reason I chose WLS--I was blessed with my only child at 42 and he has autism--I wanted to have a shot at a longer, healthier, more active life with easier mobility with my son. To me, the best and safest way to lose the weight will be with the RNY. I am excited to get my life back!! I am just waiting for my insurance companies to finish deciding some things, and surgery is about 3-4 weeks out from now. I would love to hear from past banders to know how they are doing now--I should have trusted my gut and done the RNY 4 years ago!! Glad to find this board! Louise

Hi! I am new too ( you can read about me below). I too have a son with ASD. He is now 16 and about to get his drivers license! HELP!! Good luck to you. I hope your insurance works things out for you. I should be having an RNY the end of June. But I don't have a date yet. I think this is going to be an important tool to my success. WELCOME!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
