What happens at the pulmonary appointment?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, if you're a smoker, have CODP, asthma, or any other lung impairment...this is gonna suck for you.

I have to quit smoking for 6 months prior to surgery. Doing ok at it' date=' my surgery won't be until December so by June 1st Ill be completely good to go. I have weened myself off of them because cold turkey didn't work too well. Only at about two a day right now.[/quote']

That is what messed me up for my pulmonary. My doctor doesn't require to quit smoking. So the pulmonary was hard for me.

I'm not sure about my doctor but my insurance does. I work for my insurance company so no way around "pretending" to quit but it's for the better, I suppose.

I thought it would be a requirement for me to quit through my insurance. But my doctor said its not and he doesn't require it because then so many people who need the surgery wouldn't get it.

I'm not a smoker but I found it interesting that in my program you are required to be nicotine free before your surgery. They test you when you sow up for your surgery and if you test positive for nicotine they cancel it and reschedule it in three months. Bummer if you don't quit...

That really surprises me because the revision class I attended spent a great deal of time talking about the dangerous issues of smoking and Bariatric surgery. We was also told if we smoke...no surgery.

That's what I though as u had done all my testing and classes 2 years ago and they required me to quit I ended up not getting WLS then because my husband deployed to Afghanistan and we lived in Alaska and I had no help with our kids. So here it is 2 years later and I'm redoing everything and my dr says smoking is not an issue.

Oh I'm definitely quitting. Only at about two cigarettes a day and fully intend to have none by June. I'm too scared of ulcers and slow healing as they are both common for smokers after surgery, per my surgeon and research.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
