Anna Banana's Excellent Gastric Bypass Adventure!

Hi! Today is my first day on this site.

Here's my quick story. At age 50, at the highest weight I've ever been of 252lbs., having gained 10lbs. for each of the last 3 years, and after doing every type of weight loss program available, I decided to have surgery. I have Anthem Blue Cross PPP (for whatever good it did me) I was forced to use a doctor that worked through a hospital that was at a "Center for Excellence". There was only one doctor within 50 miles (sounds like an HMO doesn't it), and that doctor charged an additional $3,000.00 out of pocket. I found another "COE" about 100 miles away that was awesome.

My surgery was performed by Dr. Mary Estahkry at Valley Medical Center in Pleasanton, CA. Her practice was very informative, I had to take a number of nutrition classes, lose about 15 lbs on my own, and then had my surgery on December 11, 2012.

The surgery went very well, I had the RNY because I have previously had a problem with acid reflux, this procedure is the best for that problem. After surgery, the first 3ozs. of Fluid brought to me, was overwhelming in flavor. I could barely get anything down. I did keep sipping Water. I stayed in hospital two nights and was ready to go home.

I did the appropriate diet, and the 2nd day home, I was basically back to my old self, except for my eating habits of course! My daughter was home for winter break, she said, "If I didn't know better, I wouldn't have any idea that you just had surgery." Laproscopic surgery is great!! I still took it easy and took naps.

Today is May 8, 2013 and I am at 198. Up and down for the past month. I have been eating more than I should and inappropriate foods, primarily sweets. That is my downfall, I really think I'm addicted to sugar.

Things I have done right:

-taken my Vitamins

-gone on walk/runs and bike rides (up to 30miles)

-cut-out soda!!!

-encouraged my buddy

-eat Protein at most meals

-drink Protein shakes (I do have frozen fruit/protein smoothies, I OD"d on chocolate)

I need to get back on the stick and not eat inappropriately to continue to lose weight.

Things I've enjoyed more since surgery:

-buying clothes in the regular store size 16 currently :P

-being able to tie my shoes easier

-being able to CROSS MY LEGS!! (it feels so good!!)

-hugging closer :D

-more comfortable during sex

-buying an XL Calvin Klein belt

-riding my bike!!

-walk/jogging (I love to run, I believe endorphins do exist!) :)

-having more energy.

Gotta go, time for dinner!

What is the very best, single thing that has helped you to continue to lose weight after surgery?

Bye!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
