When is it safe to drink wine again? I had my gastric bypass on 4-4-13, and my we're throwing a surprise 50th birthday party for my mother-in-law on May 11.. Just wondering if I'll be able to have a glass by then? Obviously this is something I'll discuss with my Dr at my next appt, just curious to hear other peoples experiences...

A few sips will be all you can likely handle. I had surgery 2/28/13 and was allowed a few sips if wine 4 weeks post op as I had a party to go to. A few sips were plenty and wonderful.

I had my first glass of wine about 3 months post op and it was delicious :) Check with your surgeon first and also some people handle alcohol way different after surgery. So you may want to take a test run at home before the party just to make sure you are OK with it. You don't want to cause a scene at your MIL's 50th b-day party LOL :)

This is true! I'll talk to the Dr and try a little at home. Good advice thanks!

I just had my nurse education class for preop today. My program says no wine or any other alcohol for a full year. They said the liver is working overtime processing all the toxins released from stored fat as we lose weight so quickly. Alcohol use can cause liver failure in the first year after surgery. Very high risk. Because of the bypass (if that is your surgery type) when you do begin to try alcohol again it is absorbed very quickly into your system. So you can get drunk more quickly, on less, and it lasts longer. Moderation is key.

My surgeon's "official" word is no alcohol again, but "un-official" is just to be careful on both volume and frequency. It will go to your liver quicker and stay there longer. I have had both wine and gin since my surgery and while before I would drink about 1 drink per hour about 1 time per week, I have limited it to 1 drink per evening every few weeks.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
