1000 pound man on Dr. Phil

Actually I just updated it from 9-11 - and yep that is true - I can't go into it again but i've posted all over this board - thrown in the towel, depressed beyond belief, metabolically tested, etc etc etc.

I just returned from my unfill and i went for a consult to have the band removed - after the consult i ended up with an unfill so i could eat 3 bandster meals a day + two Snacks - they felt my eating was erratic and pbing too much - i have food diaries for over 1 year, i exercise regularly and can't get a damn pound off.

I also have appetite supreseents now but i know they will quit working as they always do but i'm eating what most bandsters report eating now - about 600-800 calories a day.

I first tried 1200-1500 - gainecd, then 1000-1200- pretty much maintained so here i am.

I'm sure i will be considered a band failure butwhat can i do? I've been on the verge of quitting so many times but at least i haven't gained - by now i would have been up 40 lbs as in the past.

I wanted to lose 65lbs but now I would be THRILLED to lose 20 - in fact, i don't even care to lose 65 cuz that seems absolutely impossible and it would take about 10 years so maybe it will happen.

I only know 2 other bandsters in my shoes and let me tell you it is a lonely lonely place - everyone assumes you are doing something wrong and while I am not perfect I am pretty damn close - lol

I saw the above mentioned Dr. Phil. The lady kept saying how happy she was, but she didn't look happy and no one around her was happy either. I was miserable at 327lbs, I can't imagine weighing 500 or more lbs. Both of those people need counseling and help with their addictions.

Although I don't watch Dr. Phil I would suspect that these poor individuals are not simply victims of their own addictions. Marys' post about the failure of her lapband even though she had been carefully following her caloric intake indicates that this business of how much you eat and what you eat may tragically be only one part of a complex equation for some of us.

I believe that the lapband works for most of us. It trims our appetite and if we are wise we also do our part by learning how to eat more intelligently. But we must acknowledge that this business of who gains weight and why is a deeply complex issue and has to do with so much more than simple gluttony although that does play a role, of course.

While I do think that counselling will be of use for those two individuals showcased on Dr. Phil, I kinda think that metabolic specialists are much more useful at this point, metabolic specialists and gastric surgeons. Eventually these poor souls will need extensive counselling by psychologists and dieticians. A one shot TV session by Dr. Phil is not really going to help them.

Green, i caught the tail end of the show but i believe that the two will be having sugery but at this point they are too big for the surgery. He said that they couldn't find a surgon that would touch them. They have to lose a significant amount of weight and they can then have the surgery. But i agree with you something more than glutony is going on.

Mary -- You might want to have some other things checked like your thyroid and stuff. But this can be very slow. I have lost two pounds in the last 4 months. I'm not perfect and don't exercise except for taking care of mother, but I barely eat anything and I still don't lost weight. So it's different for everyone. Keep your chin up.

Well I'm not an expert by any means but right before i decided to be banded i tried weight watchers 3 times and couldn't lose weight - maybe 1-2lbs and i followed it - also i tried scarsdale diet which i had tried many times in the past and lost pretty well and i only lost about 3 pounds so i was so frustrated i said i'm getting the lapband as a last resort - i guess i should have known i would have trouble losing with that too - i think it is my age going through perimenapoause and years and years of yo you dieting. If you can lose weight now but have bad habits the band will help you. Even tho i haven't lost near what i want - i havent really gained and let me tell you i had so many bad habits around food etc that i didnt even realize and the band doesn't let you fool yourself.

So after a year plus I don't eat to stuffed anymore, I can stop eating and watch others eat without freaking out, i can throw food away (tho that is still hard) and I eat slower and chew which i only inhaled before.

I did have my thyroid tested and i am smack in the middle normal - go figure.

I am a pretty rare bandster so don't be scared it wont work for you - I am still hopeful -

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
