Pre-op...too much protein? constipation?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am still pre-op, waiting on the insurance approval. In the past couple months, I've been trying to make changes in my diet so the transition post-op won't be so hard. Mainly, I've paid closer attention to my Protein intake and cut out (almost) all sweets and sodas. Typically I have only one traditional meal each day (lunch) and for Breakfast I have a Protein Shake and dinner another shake or greek yogurt...something super light. I feel great...EXCEPT that over the past 2 months I've been constipated more times than I have in my whole entire life. Have any of you experienced this? Is it possible that I'm getting too much Protein? Or is it something I've cut out of my diet that's messing me up?

Thanks guys!

Bettina

I was very constipated after my lap band removal and when I added oatmeal in to my Breakfast, it worked wonders!

Sounds like you need more fiber. Also, are you taking an Iron supplement? That will cause Constipation as well.

Hi Bettina,

I'm in the same (or was) boat as you. I have to be on a low carb/high protein Atkins type diet for the 2 weeks b4 my surgery to shrink my liver. I was constipated as well. I tried drinking something hot first thing in the morning followed by some exercise helped a lot. Also, I started drinking those Crystal light packets that have the fiber with my Water. Also, I take the colace stool softener. My surgery director told me not to take the colace longer than a week though. I hope at least one of these things helps. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
