Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Osteoarthritis, Chronic Fatigue WLS Support

Recommended Posts

We've found in a few conversations that we have a lot of the same unusual experiences. Did you know that people with Fibromyalgia who are sensitive to smells and noise, are experiencing heightened sensitivities in those areas after weight loss surgery? We can help each other by caring, and sharing info.

Interesting!!! My Fibromyalgia makes me super sensitive to smells. I have a hard time getting by the smell of my Protein Drinks to get them to my mouth. And when I walk in my parents house, my moms perfume almost gives me an instant headache.

So happy to have lost 47 pounds since my March 22, 2013 RNY surgery. I can already tell the difference in how clothes I had to put-aside now fit better. My family is excited and proud of my progress and looking forward to continual improvements. I have faith that many of my co-morbid stuff will be alleviated over time along with my weight loss. I notice family disappointment when they want me to do something even now and I won't because of Fibromyalgia pain. My blood pressure, osteoarthritis in both knees (needing replacement) and my spine should improve. I don't know if I can expect that with Fibro. How is it working-out for you so far?

I too, have fibromyalgia, RA,&,chronic pain & hypothyroidism all of which helped me on my way to weighing 386lbs the day of surgery. I'm down 90lbs ( my surgery was on 1/29/13). Anyway smells get to me as well especially onions if I could wear a mask I would, not only do I get a headache but it makes me nauseousI also have a problem with foods not tasting like they used to. Anyone else with that problem?

I have fibro, I too am sensitive to smell, but mainly to my Protein. I am ok if I drink it through a sippy cup or through a straw, I even plug my nose on occasion if I have to drink it out of a cup. Its not so bad. Sometimes I feel like the smell is stuck in my nose, its kind of like a burning sensation, but you never know what the true sensation is because of the fibro.

People that have had RNY tend to smell bad from kesetosis, its only for a little while while after surgery, but it comes out of your pores so you will stink for a few months. I keep a can of air freshener close by all around the house because after surgery, from having our guts rearranged you tend to get really bad smelling gas too.

I also have a few yankee candles that I am ok with mainly fresh smells like Clean Cotton, Sweat Pea....Like you, I can't stand really strong smells but if its a light smell its ok.

One thing I have noticed since surgery is that I am having more flares than normal, I have had to cut back on the amount I am working out, but as far as I know its just me. I was working out 15-30mins daily before surgery and have to cut that to every other day. I feel like I am in a rut, I workout, flare, then recover....

Kesetosis? Yuck! Never heard of it, so I Googled. It sounds awful. I am more sensitive to odors (and excessively loud noise) now, more than before surgery.

lol, sorry I spelled it wrong its Ketoacidosis...it happens to diabetic people when they go into starvation mode, although ours is not from diabetes, but that is what a nutritionist described it as...anyway you sweat, it stinks pretty bad at least that is how she described it to me, she had RNY too...it doesn't happen to everyone, and only lasts for a little while, and you will know if you get it so don't worry too much

Anyone out there with Rheumatoid Arthritis? Along with Fibromyalgia? I've been having the worst time with joint pain these past few days, ever since this heat wave has hit NJ. The humidity is killing my knees (they both need to be replaced, but I'm chicken to go through the surgery) I take Morphine & Methadone for the pain & it's not doing much, I started prednisone again which I've been avoiding because it makes me hungry,& I'm terrified of gaining weight back. My weight loss has slowed down to about 2lbs a week. I'm just so down I'm back in bed because lying down is the only comfortable position & I feel just the way I did before surgery, at 386lbs I never wanted to get up . I feel like I'm back at square one. Thanks for listening to me whine. I wish I had someone to talk to.

Mary, your body will hurt for a while if your still actively losing weight. Your muscles have to adjust to the new size. For me I am losing weight really slow, only 40 lbs in 5 months so its been easier on me to adjust to the changes in my body. Which is also nice as I seem to have more fibro flares as well. I have another friend that had surgery the same time I did (within a week), she has lost 95lbs and she says her body really hurts. She commented the other day about her hip moving while she walked...anyway so its quite normal to be feeling bad while your actively losing weight....Good Luck

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
