Can you drink protein drinks too fast?

Recommended Posts

I have been struggling with Protein since having some complications from my rny. I am still on purée stage of food. I am 6 weeks post op, but only 2 weeks out from leaking complications. I had to restart food stages. This morning I made half a pack of Big Train Fit Frappe Mocha which makes 8oz of a drink. I was drinking it over a 20 minute time frame and before I could finish it I started getting extremely nauseous. To the point of almost having it come back up. Should I be drinking less at a time? Like 4oz over 30 mins? Thanks for your help :)

Everyone is different on what they can handle, I would just sip, sip, sip and don't put any time limits on how quick you can drink something. When I was right out of surgery I would fill 4 bottles of Water, I would number them 1 thur 4 and I just made sure buy the time I went to sleep all 4 bottles were empty. That was my 68 oz. of water daily, I would just take small baby sips all day long.

this was tough for me too because I could drink my fluids very quickly.... and without naseua. I could down 8 oz of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury broth in 10 mins.

I saw my Dr today and discussed this and he told me to STOP. He explained it similar to this - my stomach is not acting right yet; it is not used to itself. It may not even have full feeling and may not even understand when it is supposed to message you that it is full.

He told me that no matter what, I must measure my drinks AND food and NOT consume more than 1oz at a time and no less than 10 mins a part. He said to start at 15 min intervals and not to go below 10. He said that it is not necessarily a great thing that I am not feeling pain. He said my stomach needs at least 4 months to begin to understand itself. And most importantly is to chew - even pureed because I MUST have the saliva enzyme go down with the food.< /p>

How much Protein should you have a day?

I should be getting between 60-80. I think ultimately that for some reason I dumped on it and it had very little sugar. I've had other things with more sugar and not dumped but for some reason I just had a reaction to this.

Thanks everyone for replying :)

I have posted this response before but will again. I sometimes will dump from drinking too fast. I was like you and feeling very sick drinking my Protein Shakes and my dr. Told me I needed to slow down, that it should take anywhere from 45 min to 1 hr to drink 6 oz of liquid. Good luck and see if slowing it down helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
