How long until pureed foods?

Recommended Posts

How long did you have to wait until you could have pureed foods? There are so many variations, just hoping to get an average.

I have to wait 2 weeks...then 2 weeks pureed...2 weeks soft foods...then regular diet.

I am jealous of those that move through the stages quickly but I'm determined to follow my doctors guidelines. (Kaiser insurance)

I have a food list from my doctor that I follow. It lays out everything or idea to have each hour for the 1st week after being released.

Example:

8am - 3 oz Decaf tea

9am - 3 oz SF Jello

10am - 3 oz sports drink

etc etc etc - and in addition SIP SIP SIP

When I read a thread like this, I just get a lttle bit confused.

What do you guys consider a clear liquid? I wouldn't consider SF hot cocoa a clear liquid and this is why I begin to get confused. I also would not consider a protien shake, a clear liquid.

My papers then go on to list foods/ideas for stage 3, 4, and 5 (3 being full liquids, 4 being pureed, 5 being soft foods)

I didn't get instructions like that. Clear Liquids were strictly broth, SF jello and popsicles, and hot decaf teas. But I was on full liquids when I left the hospital by day 3 after surgery. I just wonder because how much everyone's instructions vary, why they are not standardized. Just like the pre-op diet, not everyone does the 2 week clears. I would think with all of the research, it would all be a standard amount of time for everyone.

SF cocoa is a full liquid, not a clear liquid. Same with milky Protein Shakes. There are a few Protein Drinks that ARE clear--isopure is one of them.

So for me. I didn't have a pre op diet. As far as now 2 weeks clear diet. 4 weeks soft and purée and then on to more solid foods.

I'm on 2 week full liquid

4 week soft foods

Then can introduce solids

My dr said the reasoning begins the time period for liquids and soft is that your pouch and gut are still trying to heal. He said that if you introduce soft foods too early, your pouch is having to pump harder to "digest" and you risk popping a staple - therefore risk sepsis. I do think it odd though- that there is not a "standard" procedure- it seems as if its each drs personal preference.

Would mixing unflavored Unjury to Jello and teas be considered clear?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
