My surgery was Wednesday the 17th....

Recommended Posts

My surgery was pushed back to 11am when my surgeon had an emergency case push my time back. I finally went in around1pm. They had me all ready with some relaxing meds, numbed my arm and put in the IV. I remember talking to the wonderful 2 anesthesiologists who knew I was there by myself. They were so kind....they told me that they would take very good care of me and that they had adopted me as family. And nothing would happen to their family! Just a very warm feeling and much appreciated! Prior to going back to surgery they took my cpap and belongings and locked them up. Next thing I remember I am awake in my room and a security officer is delivering my belongings. I was not in pain, a little uncomfortable, but I had a pain med pump to keep me that way. The nurse set up my cpap and made sure I was comfy. I called my parents and found out that my doctor had called them and my nurse also had called them. Everything went really well! Big relief!!

Since I was on IV's i was not allowed anything to drink until the next morning(thursday.) The doctor came by and let me go back to Clear liquids until I see him on Tuesday. I slept off and on that night. I even walked at 5:30am. Day 1 post surgery went well until that night. I had already walked several times, was blessed with no shoulder pain (YAY), and had no nausea. Until Thursday night. First my blood pressure went up to 199/94 which was lots higher than earlier 150's/85..then nausea...nausea meds.....then the dry heaves...that was painful but it stopped after 3-4 times and they gave me a big dose of pain meds. That worked. I slept really well that night and woke up with very little pain. Most annoying? The drain...darn thing leaked...but it did what it was supposed to I guess. Doctor came to see me right after the veggie broth, coffee, and lemonade crystal light showed up at 9am. He said I could go home, but to rest, rest, rest, and sip liquids until Monday. Then I can go on full liquids.!! He said I could walk up my stairs and to walk when I could outside. So, a friend came for me and I made it home. So far I have been really careful with my cats, one of which is a 30 pound Maine Coon. He wants to lie on me and since I can't let him, he has taken to cuddly on my pillow above my head.

Today is Day 2 post op, and I have walked up and down a hill to the mailbox, rested, sipped, rested, had a shower, rested...lol...get the drift?? But I feel great! I hope this helps some of you who are as nervous as I was! Stay positive, be proactive in trying to walk some, and know we are all there for you. Back to rest I go!

I too was April 17. I too am in amazing shape. I have been walking and doing a low impact arm workout too. was able to go home the next day but I opted to stay since I am 2hrs from the hospital. I also came home to no help; thus independent totally. I too have a cat who likes to lay on me, so I have been pushing him down to my legs. If you click my profile, and gallery, you can see a few pics of the process. Glad to hear your surgery went as well as mine!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
