44 yr old male 1 1/2 yr Post Op

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery March 5. I just turned 45 and was 373 at surgery. I went down to 327 but got into bad habits and now 340. I am so disappointed in myself. The only thing good is that I'm at waist 50" from 56" and my diabetes is gone. I think I stretched my pouch. I seem to be able to eat more without even dumping. I am not sure what to do. Plus my gas is horrendous.

Something my doc said has really stuck with me through the last year. We will gravitate to foods that go down well. For example seafood is really easy on my stomach and I feel like I always over eat on it. However chicken or BBQ sits heavy and I don't eat very much. Now my pouch did not change it is just that I have learned I can eat more of something light. So if given the choice between the two I will go with seafood.

So when I get the feeling like my pouch is dysfunctional then I will eat BBQ and within a few bites my pouch hurts and I know everything is fine.

I walk 3 times a day at about 20 minutes per. I can't do more than that at a time due to spinal issues. I have tracked my food...every day and am eating between 1000 and 1100 calories. I am now about 4.5 months post op and have gone from 430 to 360 with only about 10lbs lost in the last 30+ days. I know exactly what I'm eating but still have no clue why I'm not losing more. My diet is mostly Protein Shakes and vegetarian Protein sources. It seems almost impossible that I am not losing at only 1000 calories which is what my nut has recommended.

Stalls are common. I am 9 months post op and following around 1,000 calories per day. I have had stalls of two months. My perspective is to remember that I am in better health today than I was yesterday due to weight loss. I am now losing about one pound per month. And I am happy with it. My surgeon (whom I consider to be excellent and privileged to have as a surgeon) explained to me that unless I become an athlete, I will always be "chubby." I very much appreciated his insights. I personally never set a goal weight. I set a goal to lower my blood pressure and cholesterol. You have accomplished a lot. I very much admire your discipline in exercise and calorie control.

I wish you and everyone in this forum great success in the weight loss journey.

Thanks. I feel my stomach had stretched. Only 5 months out. I am losing a little and I have been tempted to not eat right. I don't trust myself. The good part is most of my numbers A1C BP etc look great. My other bad habit is I gulp my liquids down vs sip. I am going to stay encouraged and get back on the wagon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
