I have to do a 6 month supervised diet prior to surgery. I only have to lose 10 pounds, but I have osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and other health issues. All which make working out very painful. I have started working out but like I am not going to be able to do what I have to because the weight on my poor joints is killing me. What else can I do to lose maximum weight before surgery. I have heard I should lose as much as possible since you topically only keep 80% off. Or is it you only lose 80% of what you should? I don't remember. If you have advice on losing weight please help. I have 5 more months. Thanks, Niki

you have 6 months to lose 10 lbs minimum? You can do that!!!

Cut out as many of your starchy carbs as possible, and drink only Water. You will have this for life after surgery anyway. I am not a doctor but I have read rearch that cutting those carbs can help your fibro.

If you can make it 4 days without heavy carbs, you will slowly begin to stop craving them.

JMHO, but you asked :)

I cut out carbs including sugar, Pasta, grains, Desserts, corn, processed foods, soda, etc like a year ago. I have PCOS so I am insulin resistant. I am not sure what more to cut out. I drink mainly Water. I have coffee with sugar free flavored Creamer and a sugar free red bull everyday. I typically eat wheat free gluten free on a daily basis. We try and have at least 2 veggies with dinner every night.

Try cutting out some of the caffeine. I have noticed that since I started really digging into how you feel if you eat the wrong things, I have been more wary of what i am eating and how i feel. Someone posted signs your pouch is full. i noticed that i tend to have a runny nose about halfway through my meals that i never noticed before. SO i stop. I have been doing this for about a week and lost 5 lbs. I also have pcos ( just found out finally) and i am now 6 days clean from diet coke. It makes a big difference if you can get over the hump.

Where are you having your surgery done?

OK, I too am PCOD and insulin resistant and alrhough I can be successful when I cut out carbs, I have experienced what you mention.

In my case, I was not getting enough food!! I wasn't eating enough actually. So I changed my entire everything by increasing all protiens drastically and walking. And I forced myself to eat 5x a day instead of 2 or 3.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
