Where has my hair gone!

Recommended Posts

Wondering what everyone is doing about Hair loss? I am 6 months out and I'm sure I've lost half my hair now! I have really long hair and its always been thick, now it's so thin! It seems every time I shower, I loose a handful!

Anyone else having issues and what are you doing to minimize it?

I've heard taking Biotin helps. My Celebrate Vitamin has biotin in it. I don't know what I'll do when it happens. Probably cut my hair to chin length and use lots of thickening gel.

I am barely 4 weeks post op but my doctor prescribed Zinc tablets (once a week, crushed) to avoid Hair loss. Got them at wal-mart.

Ya, I take Biotin twice a day. I also take silica tabs three times a day and my dr recommend krill oil. All of this I started this past week so I'm not sure if its doing anything yet but we shall see. I always cussed my thick hair.....never again! ;)

Well, from what I hear it can last until a year out...but then should slow down and hopefully stop if the extra suppliments you're taking don't work. So that's a good thing. Just remember, your hair is on a 3 month cycle (toenails are on a year) so basically it will take 3 months to notice new growth. BUT in three months you should see some, whether the loss stops or not, I would think.

I did nothing.... The shock of surgery and anesthesia causes a lot of the Hair loss. So once the shock is done... All you can do is wait for the hair to grow back. I didn't loose too much hair but where I lost it lol was smack dab in the front of my hair line. Almost a year out its grown back :-)

I am almost 4 months out and at 3 months I started with gobs of hair in strands falling out. I started taking Biotin 5000 mg a month before surgery and still take it. I have been shampooing with Gardina fall out Shampoo and conditioner also are my bariactric Vitamins that contains all the nutrients it still is falling out. What I don't get is my 60 to 80 grams of Protein every day so that might be the reason I am losing my hair. But so far it isn't so thin I have bald spots or thinning that you can see my scalp

I haven't gotten to the 3 or 4 month post op but I did experience hair loss a month before my surgery because of the blood transfusion I received in the hospital when I had pneumonia in late December. It only lasted for about a month and I purchased some clip in weave extensions to make my hair fuller.

A little advice for you all...

If you can't achieve it WEAVE IT! LOL

It must really be an individual thing, too. I have been taking Biotin since about 5 months pre surgery, and have continued and I am three months out. I"m getting about 60-70 g of Protein daily minimum.

I don't seem to be losing it much more than usual, but I have always shed like a domestic cat. I lost hair postpartum, but it was never enough that other people would notice.

I hear it's temporary...

I've had terrible Hair loss. Not so much that you can see my scalp, but I am getting about 5 times as much as I used to every day. I am 15 weeks out and this is the timeframe everyone warned me about with the hair loss. It will grow back. I am hoping that everyone is going to notice my weight loss and not my hair loss ;)

Hair loss is caused by stresses to your body and take several months AFTER the fact to occur. By the time you SEE hair loss the event that CAUSED it is already months in your past so there is nothing you can do about it. Some causes are: major surgery, extreme weight loss, diet changes or restrictions, all of which we experience. Things you can do to help MINIMIZE hair loss are: take Biotin starting before surgery, eat all your Protein, avoid harsh chemicals (hair color, perm). To help you deal with hair loss use gentle hair products that don't weigh down your hair and try a new haircut. Some other supplements are thought to be helpful.

Important to remember: THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY. THE HAIR LOSS WILL STOP. YOUR HAIR WILL GROW BACK! Like the surgery itself this is just something else we endure on the way to our goal to be healthy.

I am a little over two years out, and my hair is and has been much fuller over the past year. Well worth it. I went with a super short and funky cut when it started thinning and it worked great for me...Fuller after the first cut.

I take Biotin. I also use Garnier's Fall Fight Shampoo and conditioner. They both have Biotin in them. I was losing hair at about 4 months out but adding the biotin and Garnier really helped.

It also helps to make sure you're getting enough Protein. If you're at the low end of the range your doctor gave you, try to get a little more in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
