kennyjoon 0 Posted April 10, 2013 I have had low Vitamin D levels for as long as I can remember. The levels have ranged from 17-24. I have taken 2,000 - 4,000 iu supplements for years. I even tried 50,000 iu weekly prescription supplements for a couple of months last year and the level only went up to 26. So I was nervous to see what my level would be 3 months post bypass, but to my surprise, the level was 42! So my question is can anyone think of a logical explanation for this or is it most likely an error? My doctor was pleasantly surprised, but did not have any theory as to why it happened. I suppose my milk intake has increased greatly due to Protein Shakes, etc (I never really drank much milk) but I don't know if that alone can explain it. Has anyone had a similar experience? I am just curious but thrilled (if the results are accurate). -kennyjoon
SoccerMomma73 1,867 Posted April 11, 2013 Ah ha!!! A question I can answer!!! Vitamin D is fat soluble. Almost ALL my obese patients have low D because it sort of gets absorbed into the fat where it can't be used for bones or be measured in blood work. Less fat to absorb D = higher Vitamin D....ALSO some of the newer studies show higher D levels actually help burn fat, go figure. Whatever, it's a win win for you!!!! SoccerMomma73 1,867 Posted December 27, 2013 Wondering How much Vit. D should a person take a day? Thanks for the explaination about how Vit. D works...Very interesting . It varies significantly from person to person, your doc will have to watch your levels to determine what works for you. I average 1000 units a day and that keeps me at a good level. Pre-RNY I took 50000 units a week to keep me at an appropriate level.
